Objective: To analyse for the first time the response of the corticotroph-type and the melanotroph-type pituitary proopiomelanocortin (POMC) system with regard to in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment using self-developed highly specific non-cross-reacting radioimmunoassay.
Setting: University hospital. patients: A total of 28 patients undergoing IVF oocyte retrieval.
Response to delivery stress is not mediated by beta-endorphin (1-31).

- The study aimed to investigate how the pituitary proopiomelanocortin (POMC) response varies between women undergoing vaginal delivery and caesarean section stress, focusing on hormone interactions during these processes.
- Blood samples were collected from 10 women in labor and 16 women undergoing elective caesarean sections to measure levels of various hormones and POMC fragments at different stages of delivery.
- Results indicated that while the corticotroph-type POMC system was activated in both delivery methods, the melanotroph-type system showed no increase, and significant decreases in sexual steroids were observed.
