Oral supplementation of anthocyanins-rich haskap () berry (HB) reduces 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK)-induced lung tumorigenesis, cytotoxicity, DNA damage, and modulated inflammation in vitro and in vivo. The procarcinogen NNK is metabolically activated by cytochrome P450 (P450) enzymes, producing reactive metabolites that induce lung carcinogenesis. : Therefore, we hypothesized that the HB-modulated protective effect against NNK could be due to its ability to suppress P450 enzymes.

Breast cancer causes the most cancer fatalities in women worldwide. Approximately one-third of breast cancers metastasize, or spread from primary tumors to other tissues, and have a 70% 5-year mortality rate. Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine whether the magnitude of the peripheral inflammatory response to cardiovascular surgery is associated with increases in blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability as reflected by changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)/plasma S100B concentrations.

Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis from a prospective cohort study of 35 patients undergoing elective thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair with (n = 17) or without (n = 18) cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Plasma and CSF S100B, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and albumin concentrations were measured at baseline (C) and serially for up to five days.

There is evidence that use of drugs with anticholinergic properties increases the risk of cognitive impairment, and increased exposure to these drugs potentiates this risk. Anticholinergic drugs are commonly used even with associated risk of adverse events. Aging, sex, and genetic polymorphisms of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes are associated with alterations in pharmacokinetic processes, which increase drug exposure and may further increase the risk of adverse drug events.

Dabigatran etexilate represents a possible improved alternative to warfarin for anticoagulation in hemodialysis patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The objective was to determine dabigatran plasma concentrations and anticoagulant effects following administration of a single 110 mg oral dose of dabigatran etexilate to 10 adult patients immediately prior to starting hemodialysis. Mass spectrometry and the Hemoclot® assay were used, respectively, to determine free (unconjugated) dabigatran concentrations and thrombin time (TT) in plasma samples collected intermittently over 48 hours.
