Maxillary retention: is longer better?

Two different maxillary retention regimes were compared to ascertain if differences in posttreatment relapse existed. The patient pool was derived from subjects being treated at two orthodontic departments in the west of Scotland. Group 1 (20 patients) followed a 6 month regime using removable upper Hawley retainers for a period of 3 months full time and 3 months nights only.

The average ethanol content of beer in the U.S. and individual states: estimates for use in aggregate consumption statistics.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to describe the variation in the ethanol content of beer and specific categories of beer, and to illustrate the importance of accurate assessment of ethanol conversion factors for the calculation of apparent ethanol consumption from beer at the state and national levels in the U.S.

Method: Published sources of brand-level ethanol content, national brand share of beer categories and state beer category market shares are utilized to (1) estimate the mean ethanol content of each beer category in the U.

Enantioselective deprotonation reactions using polymer-supported chiral magnesium amide bases.

Novel and readily accessible polymer-supported chiral magnesium amide reagents have been prepared and shown to be effective in the asymmetric deprotonation of a series of prochiral cyclohexanones, affording good to excellent levels of both conversion and enantiomeric ratio (up to 93:7); the Merrifield-based chiral amine species has been shown to be readily recyclable.

Wartime Paris, cirrhosis mortality, and the ceteris paribus assumption.

Objective: This article critiques the ceteris paribus assumption, which tacitly sustains the epidemiologic literature's inference that the sharp decline in cirrhosis mortality observed in Paris during the Second World War derived from a sharp constriction in wine consumption. Paris's wartime circumstances deviate substantially from the "all else being equal" assumption, and at least three other hypotheses for the cirrhosis decline may be contemplated.

Method: Historical and statistical review.

Stability of alcohol consumption over time: evidence from three longitudinal surveys from the United States.

Objective: To assess the stability of individual monthly alcohol consumption volume in three studies from the United States: The first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with three measurements, The Framingham Offspring and Spouse Cohort with four measurements, and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth with six measurements. The results will aid in the interpretation of studies that assess consumption at one point only.

Method: Five analyses measure (1) the amount of change between measurements, (2) the correlation between reported consumption, (3) patterns of later drinking by the baseline group, (4) mean consumption of abstainers when they drink and heavy drinkers when not drinking heavily and (5) the strength of past consumption in predicting present consumption.

A clinical trial of light cure acrylic resin for orthodontic use.

Objective: To ascertain whether or not the less porous surface associated with visible light cure appliances and the absence of free monomer had any measurable affect upon mucosal erythema, and to assess the durability of such appliances in a clinical context.

Design: A prospective randomized trial of visible light cure (Triad VLC) and autopolymerizing (Orthoresin) acrylic resin used as orthodontic base plate materials.

Setting: University Dental Hospital and School.

Influence of SHIP on the NK repertoire and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.

Natural killer cell (NK) receptors for major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I influence engraftment and graft-versus-tumor effects after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. We find that SH2-containing inositol phosphatase (SHIP) influences the repertoire of NK receptors. In adult SHIP-/- mice, the NK compartment is dominated by cells that express two inhibitory receptors capable of binding either self or allogeneic MHC ligands.

Solution of Kramers' problem for a moderately to heavily damped elastic string.

We obtain the nucleation rate of critical droplets for an elastic string moving in a double-well potential and subject to noise and damping forces. We obtain this rate for a class of potentials that includes both the asymmetric straight phi(4) and the straight phi(6) potentials. The frequencies of small oscillations about the critical droplet are obtained from a Heun equation.

Key tricyclic synthetic intermediates for the preparation of the sesquiterpenes alpha- and beta-cedrene.

A completely novel and direct route towards the synthesis of the natural sesquiterpenes alpha-cedrene and beta-cedrene delivered the compounds (3 beta,3a beta,7 beta)-(+/-)-6,6-ethylenedioxy-3,8,8-trimethyl-2,3,3a,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro-3a,7-methanoazulen-2-one, C(16)H(22)O(3), and (3 beta,3a beta,7 beta,8a alpha)-(+/-)-6,6-ethylenedioxy-3,8,8-trimethyl-1,2,3,3a,4,5,6,7,8,8a-decahydro-3a,7-methanoazulen-2-one, C(16)H(24)O(3), at key stages of the preparative programme. Structural elucidation showed the latter compound to have added an H atom to the same face of the cyclopentenone ring as that occupied by the methyl substituent, and also allowed correct isomer identification for further reaction.

Embryonic and hematopoietic stem cells express a novel SH2-containing inositol 5'-phosphatase isoform that partners with the Grb2 adapter protein.

SH2-containing inositol 5'-phosphatase (SHIP) modulates the activation of immune cells after recruitment to the membrane by Shc and the cytoplasmic tails of receptors. A novel SHIP isoform of approximately 104 kd expressed in primitive stem cell populations (s-SHIP) is described. It was found that s-SHIP is expressed in totipotent embryonic stem cells to the exclusion of the 145-kd SHIP isoform expressed in differentiated hematopoietic cells.

Magnesium bisamides as reagents in synthesis.

As part of the continued requirement for more selective reagents in organic synthesis, magnesium bisamides are becoming established as a class of organometallic bases with considerable potential. Their relatively mild reactivity, combined with their high degree of steric congestion, leads to a distinct class of reagents with significantly different chemo-, regio-, stereo- and enantioselectivities when compared with existing species and protocols.

Formal total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-cedrene by preparation of cedrone. Construction of the tricyclic carbon skeleton by the use of a highly efficient intramolecular Khand annulation.

The cedrene carbon skeleton was rapidly assembled from a simple monocyclic precursor by the strategic use of a high yielding intramolecular Khand cyclization reaction. Further synthetic manipulations provided a concise formal total synthesis of alpha- and beta-cedrene. Reaction: see text.

Development of a three-dimensional imaging system for analysis of facial change.

The objective of this report is to present facial changes produced by the Twin Block appliance in three-dimensional visual and numerical formats. Using a C3D system, stereophotogrammetric records were made of two children with Class II division 1 malocclusions prescribed treatment with a Twin Block appliance. Three-dimensional images of their faces were captured.

Particle size distribution of orange juice cloud after addition of sensitized pectin.

The effect of the addition of commercial pectin to orange juice that was de-esterified by alkaline treatment or pectinmethylesterase was evaluated. Pectin at various degrees of esterification (DE) was added to reconstituted frozen orange juice concentrate, and the extent of cloud loss was determined after centrifugation. Of the five pectin treatments, percent transmittance (% T) of juice remained <5%, except for the pectin treatment with a residual methoxyl content (% DE) of <5%.

Identification of a novel lipopolysaccharide-inducible gene with key features of both A kinase anchor proteins and chs1/beige proteins.

Mutations in chs1/beige result in a deficiency in intracellular transport of vesicles that leads to a generalized immunodeficiency in mice and humans. The function of NK cells, CTL, and granulocytes is impaired by these mutations, indicating that polarized trafficking of vesicles is controlled by CHS1/beige proteins. However, a molecular explanation for this defect has not been identified.

Perspective in pituitary adenomas: an end of the century review of tumorigenesis, diagnosis, and treatment.

Significant advances have been made in the molecular biological understanding of pituitary tumorigenesis. These advances will have an impact on the gene therapy of pituitary tumors in the coming century. Transsphenoidal surgery remains the mainstay of treatment for the majority of pituitary adenomas, with endoscopic surgery being used at some centers in select patients.

An evaluation of CASES--an educational audit programme for orthodontists.

A regional approach to a national clinical audit programme in orthodontics in the UK is described and evaluated. The programme was designed using the CRISIS criteria for effective continuing education. Programme participants completed duplicate questionnaires on 6 simulated patient scenarios, chosen for their relevance to everyday practice while posing important clinical dilemmas.
