Miniature actuators are utilized in various application fields, from robotics to medical devices, where compact dimensions, precise movements, and cost-effectiveness are crucial factors. Particularly for applications like braille displays, there is a critical demand for lightweight, portable, and affordable actuators to integrate into daily life for visually impaired people. However, existing actuation technologies such as electroactive polymers, electrorheological materials, and piezoelectric elements often do not meet the specific requirements of miniature actuators, especially for braille displays.

Preclinical evidence suggests that retinal neuropathy in diabetes manifests in part as photoreceptor dysfunction, preceding the development of vascular features in experimental models. It remains unknown whether such findings are relevant to patients with diabetes.

The aim of the present study was to investigate if individuals with LADA have an altered gut microbiota relative to non-diabetic control subjects, individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D), and individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Bacterial community profiling was performed with primers targeting the variable region 4 of the 16S rRNA gene and sequenced.

Objectives: The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the impact of virtually delivered Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE) on patients with LR during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Introduction: The mental health of young people has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the measures associated with it. Mental health symptoms increased across various domains during the pandemic and subjective wellbeing decreased.
Methods: This study examined the burdens and resources of Austrian school students ( = 16.
Vascular inflammation is known to cause degeneration of retinal capillaries in early diabetic retinopathy (DR), a major microvascular complication of diabetes. Past studies investigating these diabetes-induced retinal vascular abnormalities have focused primarily on the role of molecular or biochemical cues. Here we show that retinal vascular inflammation and degeneration in diabetes are also mechanically regulated by the increase in retinal vascular stiffness caused by overexpression of the collagen-cross-linking enzyme lysyl oxidase (LOX).

In total, 21 patients (mean age 84 years) with unifocal or multifocal MIBC received radiation to a dose of 48-50 Gy/16-20 fractions with weekly HT. The primary endpoint was the variation in temperature metrics, thermal dose expressed as cumulative equivalent minutes at 43 °C when the measured temperature is T (CEM43T) and net power applied in target volume per each HT session.

In this model, the torque generated by the robot and the impedance of the patient's hand are used to determine each step of the rehabilitation. In the proposed control architecture, a regression model is developed and implemented based on the extraction of tomography signals to estimate the muscles state.

Methods: Medical records were reviewed for dogs diagnosed with biceps and/or supraspinatus tendinopathy musculoskeletal ultrasound, treated using piezowave shockwave, and re-imaged post-treatment. Data collected included patient signalment, duration and grade of lameness, prior rest, piezowave dose, and patient outcome, including a return to sport where applicable.
Licensed rabies virus vaccines based on whole inactivated virus are effective in humans. However, there is a lack of detailed investigations of the elicited immune response, and whether responses can be improved using novel vaccine platforms. Here we show that two doses of a lipid nanoparticle-formulated unmodified mRNA vaccine encoding the rabies virus glycoprotein (RABV-G) induces higher levels of RABV-G specific plasmablasts and T cells in blood, and plasma cells in the bone marrow compared to two doses of Rabipur in non-human primates.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFChronic, progressive retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and retinitis pigmentosa, arise from genetic and environmental perturbations of cellular and tissue homeostasis. These disruptions accumulate with repeated exposures to stress over time, leading to progressive visual impairment and, in many cases, legal blindness. Despite decades of research, therapeutic options for the millions of patients suffering from these disorders remain severely limited, especially for treating earlier stages of pathogenesis when the opportunity to preserve the retinal structure and visual function is greatest.

In this white paper, key recommendations for visitation by children in intensive care units (ICU; both pediatric and adult), intermediate care units and emergency departments (ED) are presented. In ICUs and EDs in German-speaking countries, the visiting policies for children and adolescents are regulated very heterogeneously: sometimes they are allowed to visit patients without restrictions in age and time duration, sometimes this is only possible from the age of teenager on, and only for a short duration. A request from children to visit often triggers different, sometimes restrictive reactions among the staff.

We previously showed that, similar to abnormal biochemical factors, aberrant mechanical cues in the form of lysyl oxidase (LOX)-dependent subendothelial matrix stiffening also contribute significantly to retinal EC activation in diabetes. Yet, how LOX is itself regulated and precisely how it mechanically controls retinal EC activation in diabetes is poorly understood.

Previously, we examined short term (4-8 weeks) deficits in the Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat model of Type II diabetes. Here, we investigated the long-term (1-8 months) temporal appearance of functional deficits (retinal, cognitive, and motor), retinal vascular pathology, and retinal dopamine levels in the GK rat.

This report analyses the quality of life (QoL), toxicity and survival outcomes in patients with different tumor entities who received HT in combination with RCT. The primary endpoint of this study was the assessment of QoL scale items 3 and 12 months after treatment in patients who were treated with palliative intent and curative intent, respectively.
