Background: Methotrexate-induced liver damage in psoriasis has led to dermatologic guidelines that stipulate monitoring of liver injury by means of serial liver biopsies. Recent literature data suggest that methotrexate may be considerably less hepatotoxic than previously assumed.
Aim: To evaluate prevalence and development of liver injury in methotrexate treated psoriasis.

Medical intervention by electrical current as applied to humans or animals may have tremendous therapeutic impact if delivered while being carefully controlled. Otherwise, the situation can be harmful in terms of injury or even become lethal. These consequences demand close inspection of all relevant biological and technical factors.

It is unknown what causes this heterogeneity of fluorescence in psoriatic skin, despite adequate keratolytic treatment. Variations in fluorescence might explain the variable and the mostly partial clinical response of psoriasis seen after photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Objectives: To prove that the Zenon immunofluorescent labeling technique is suitable for the demonstration of co-localization of T-cell markers and in particular to show the distribution of T(reg) in psoriatic skin.
Background: Topical 5-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA)-photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of psoriasis has been evaluated in a few studies. In these studies different treatment parameters were used, there was a variable clinical response, and a nonhomogeneous fluorescence was seen after irradiation with Wood's light.
Objectives: To study the clinical effectiveness, immunohistochemical changes and protoporphyrin IX accumulation in ALA-PDT in patients with psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, incurable disease that frequently requires long-term treatment. Although many patients benefit from effective traditional systemic therapies, namely methotrexate, cyclosporin, retinoids and fumaric acid esters, and some patients achieve long-term disease control, unrestricted long-term administration is not recommended due to the potential for cumulative toxicity. In order to diminish the risk of toxicity, physicians have adopted various treatment approaches (e.

International literature shows several indications of problems in relation to leg ulceration, but no studies were performed to give a comprehensive overview of all problems identified and care received related to these problems.

The treatment of these lesions with a pulsed dye laser (PDL) has been described before, but a comparative study between the PDL and a potent topical treatment has never been performed.
Objectives: To compare the efficacy of the PDL in the treatment of localized, recalcitrant plaque psoriasis with a potent topical therapy, using calcipotriol/betamethasone dipropionate (Dovobet) as an active comparator.
Background: Eruptive naevi have been described to potentially arise in immune compromised patients.
Objectives: We describe three patients with eruptive benign melanocytic naevi during a phase of immunosuppressive therapy. METHODS/DIAGNOSIS: Two patients with Crohn disease were treated with either azathioprine monotherapy or a combination of azathioprine and infliximab, when eruptive naevi arose particularly at the palms and soles.
The efficacy and safety of 0.3% tacrolimus gel and 0.5% tacrolimus cream compared with calcipotriol ointment were evaluated in adults (n = 124) with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis.

Although a standardized assessment of psoriasis severity for clinical practice may be theoretically advantageous for the purposes of determining treatment, the relevance of currently available research tools in clinical practice is uncertain. Our objectives were to ascertain in workshop discussions and through a prospective survey the relevance of standard severity measures in clinical practice with regard to choice of treatment.

Objective: To further examine the safety profile of etanercept in patients with chronic, moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.
Methods: Safety data from an integrated database of 1347 patients from 3 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials were analyzed.
Background: Calcipotriol and betamethasone dipropionate are both proven products in the topical treatment of psoriasis. The efficacy and tolerability of a new ointment containing these two compounds has been assessed in six phase III clinical studies.
Objective: To compare the results obtained in the clinical studies of the new calcipotriol/betamethasone dipropionate ointment.

Background And Objectives: The effect of the established antipsoriatic treatment with topical calcipotriol (with a maximum of 100 g per week) in addition to systemic treatment with alefacept, a new biological agent for psoriasis, on epidermal cell populations in the psoriatic lesion was investigated using a combination of the Zenon labelling technique and microscopic image analysis. Epidermal cell populations were measured quantitatively with this sensitive method.
Patients/methods: Frozen sections of non-treated psoriatic epidermis and psoriatic epidermis treated with either alefacept intramuscular or alefacept intramuscular in combination with topical calcipotriol for 12 weeks were compared immunohistochemically.
Recently, it was shown that lesional skin of atopic dermatitis patients expresses low levels of some antimicrobial peptides, compared with psoriasis patients. Here we performed microarray analysis on mRNA from purified lesional epidermal cells of patients with chronic plaque psoriasis and chronic atopic dermatitis, to investigate whether this is a general phenomenon for host defense proteins, and how specific it is for this class of molecules. Microarray data were confirmed on a selected set of genes by quantitative PCR and at the protein level by immunohistochemistry.

We describe a patient with severe recalcitrant psoriasis who was treated with infliximab 5 mg/kg for 22 weeks. Rather than the expected improvement, this patient experienced an initial exacerbation, followed by the lack of efficacy over the entire 22-week period of treatment.

Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors (TCIs) used for the treatment of atopic eczema modify the immune regulatory function of the skin and may have the potential to enhance immunosuppressive ultraviolet (UV) effects. Current recommendations on UV protection in eczema patients treated with PCIs are inconsistent and have given rise to uncertainty and anxiety in patients. Therefore, the European Dermatology Forum (EDF) developed a position statement which reviews critically the available data with regard to the problem, especially analysing and commenting the limitations of rodent models for the human situation.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy, quality of life and safety of alefacept among the proportion of patients who participated in the phase III studies and who were not suitable candidates for conventional systemic psoriasis therapies or phototherapy.
Methods: The patient's historical responses at the baseline visit during the phase III studies of alefacept were used to identify a subpopulation in whom the use of methotrexate, ciclosporin, retinoids, ultraviolet B or psoralen plus ultraviolet A was ineffective or inappropriate.
Brittle nail syndrome is a heterogeneous abnormality, characterized by increased fragility of the nail plate. Brittle nails affect about 20% of the population and women are affected twice as frequently as men. The vast majority of patients experience brittle nails as a significant cosmetic problem and a substantial number indicate that these nail abnormalities are painful, impair daily activities, and may have a negative impact on occupational abilities.
