Skin thickness was found to be moderately heritable and genetically associated with lamb survival in a previous study on Romney sheep. The effect of calcination conditions (ramp rate, calcination temperature and time) on the formation of MgAl layered double oxides (MgAl LDOs) as well as their CO capture performance, has been systematically investigated. This study explores novel insights into the intricate relationship between these calcination conditions and the resulting surface characteristics, which play a vital role in CO capture efficiency. Notably, it is revealed that a rapid ramp rate (100 °C min) significantly increases surface area and hydroxyl concentration, leading to a 69% increase in CO capture efficiency compared to slower ramp rate.

This study evaluated the impacts of management of body condition score (BCS) between pregnancy scanning and lamb marking on the mortality of triplet-bearing ewes and their lambs at 19 research sites across Southern Australia. Triplet-bearing ewes of Maternal (crossbred or composite) or Merino breed were randomly allocated to treatment at pregnancy scanning at an average of 97 days from the start of joining: High or Low BCS. The BCS of individual ewes was assessed at pregnancy scanning, pre-lambing (average of 137 days from the start of joining) and marking (average of 165 days from the end of joining), and ewe and lamb mortality to marking, recorded for each mob.

Industry consultation in Australia revealed that the potential impact of the mob size of ewes during lambing on the survival of triplet-born lambs was an important research priority. Previous research has demonstrated that smaller mob sizes at lambing improve the survival of single- and especially twin-born lambs, regardless of ewe stocking rate. Access of livestock, such as cattle, to waterways has been shown to be a cause of poor water quality due to pugging damage and excretion entering the water. In New Zealand, regulations require that cattle, deer, and pigs are excluded from accessing waterways, but there are no such requirements for sheep. A total of 1039 non-dairy breed (Romney) ewes were enrolled in two studies to assess the changes in udder half defect status (hard, lump, or normal) over time and to predict the risk of future udder half defect occurrence. In the first study (study A), udder halves of 991 ewes were assessed utilizing a standardized udder palpation method and scored four times a year, for two successive years (pre-mating, pre-lambing, docking, and weaning). The second study (study B) assessed the udder halves at pre-mating, and at six weekly intervals in the first six weeks of lactation in 46 ewes that had defective and normal udder halves.

During the early postnatal period, lambs have the ability to thermoregulate body temperature via non-shivering thermogenesis through brown adipose tissue (BAT), which soon after birth begins to transform into white adipose tissue. An RNA seq approach was used to characterize the transcriptome of BAT and thyroid tissue in newborn lambs exposed to cold conditions.
