To improve understanding of structural coupling and deformation patterns throughout the loaded ribcage, the present study reports the force-displacement and kinematic responses under a highly-localized loading condition using three PMHS ribcages (ages 44, 61, and 63 years). The ribcages were quasi-statically loaded locally to a non-failure displacement (nominally 15% of the ribcage depth at the loaded rib level) at approximately 25 unilateral locations and 5-7 geometrically symmetric bilateral locations on the anterior surface of each ribcage, for a total of 94 tests. The translations of 56 points distributed around the anterior, lateral, and posterior portions of the superficial surface of the ribcage were measured while under loading.

Methods: Fifty-two freshly extracted teeth with pulpal necrosis and associated periradicular radiolucencies were obtained from 34 subjects. Twenty-six teeth with 49 canals received chemomechanical debridement (CMD) with 6% NaOCl, and 26 teeth with 52 canals received CMD plus PDT.
Contemporary computer models of the thorax designed to predict injury in automobile collisions model the costal cartilage as a homogeneous material using properties derived from local material characterization tests. No studies have validated the accuracy of these models in predicting the structural mechanics of costal cartilage. Two heterogeneities - the perichondrium and calcified regions - may affect the behavior of costal cartilage in a manner not accounted for by current models.

Method: Nine VT variables were measured from 605 imaging studies (magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography) of subjects between birth and age 19 years.
Background: This report is a further analysis of a study designed to determine clinical and microbial risk indicators for progressing periodontitis.
Methods: One hundred ninety subjects who were periodontally healthy or had early signs of periodontitis (age range: 20 to 40 years) were monitored clinically at 6-month intervals followed by supragingival cleaning. At each visit, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and blood were collected for determination of interleukin (IL)-1β content (in GCF) and IL-1 genotype (in blood).
Frontal-impact airbag systems have the potential to provide a benefit to rear seat occupants by distributing restraining forces over the body in a manner not possible using belts alone. Whole body kinematic validation of the pediatric ATD through limited comparison to post mortem human subjects (PMHS) of similar age and size has revealed key differences attributed to the rigidity of the thoracic spine. As restraint systems continue to advance, they may become more effective at limiting peak loads applied to occupants, leading to lower impact environments for which the biofidelity of the ATD is not well established.

Calcifications are categorized with respect to location, microstructure, shape, and contiguity using a novel classification scheme and quantified in terms of mineral density, volume fraction, and length of infiltration from the costo-chondral junction (CCJ). Calcifications were present throughout the cartilage by location and ranged from small diffuse calcifications to nodes, rods, plates, and even large complex structures that exhibited a microstructural morphology similar to a cross-section of diaphysial bone, with a dense shell surrounding a trabecular core.

Objective: To report a case of primary nasal tuberculosis, and to discuss the diagnostic difficulties encountered.
Setting: A teaching hospital in Norwich, UK.
Method: Case report and review of the English language literature concerning tuberculosis affecting the head and neck region.
Purpose: This study examined acoustic predictors of speech intelligibility in speakers with several types of dysarthria secondary to different diseases and conducted classification analysis solely by acoustic measures according to 3 variables (disease, speech severity, and dysarthria type).
Method: Speech recordings from 107 speakers with dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and multiple system atrophy were used for acoustic analysis and for perceptual judgment of speech intelligibility. Acoustic analysis included 8 segmental/suprasegmental features: 2nd formant frequency slope, articulation rate, voiceless interval duration, 1st moment analysis for fricatives, vowel space, F0, intensity range, and Pairwise Variability Index.
Background/aims: Severe early childhood caries is a microbial infection that severely compromises the dentition of young children. The aim of this study was to characterize the microbiota of severe early childhood caries.
Methods: Dental plaque samples from 2- to 6-year-old children were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene cloning and sequencing, and by specific PCR amplification for Streptococcus mutans and Bifidobacteriaceae species.
Frequent consumption of cariogenic foods and bacterial infection are risk factors for early childhood caries (ECC). This study hypothesized that a short diet survey focused on frequency of foods, categorized by putative cariogenicity, would differentiate severe ECC (S-ECC) from caries-free children. Children's diets were obtained by survey and plaque bacteria detected by PCR from 72 S-ECC and 38 caries-free children.
