With the rapidly expanding number of studies reporting on treatment subgroups come new challenges in analyzing and interpreting this sometimes complex area of the literature. This article discusses 3 important issues regarding the analysis and interpretation of existing trials or systematic reviews that report on treatment effect modifiers (subgroups) for specific physical therapy interventions. The key messages are: (1) point estimates of treatment modifier effect size (interaction effect) and their confidence intervals can be calculated using group-level data when individual patient-level data are not available; (2) interaction effects do not define the total effect size of the intervention in the subgroup but rather how much more effective it is in the subgroup than in those not in the subgroup; (3) recommendations regarding the use of an intervention in a subgroup need to consider the size and direction of the main effect and the interaction effect; and (4) rather than simply judging whether a treatment modifier effect is clinically important based only on the interaction effect size, a better criterion is to determine whether the combined effect of the interaction effect and main effect makes the difference between an overall effect that is clinically important and one that is not clinically important.

Quasi-one-dimensional YSi(2) nanostructures are formed via self-assembly on the Si(100) surface. These epitaxial nanowires are metastable and their formation strongly depends on the growth parameters. Background: Leg pain associated with low back pain (LBP) is recognized as a risk factor for a poor prognosis, and is included as a component in most LBP classification systems. The location of leg pain relative to the knee and the presence of a positive straight leg raise test have been suggested to have clinical implications. Mammalian bombesin-like peptides neuromedin B (NMB) and gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) act by activating NMB receptors (NMBR, BBl) and GRP receptors (GRPR,BB2), respectively. The association between gestational exposure to ethanol and adolescent ethanol abuse is well established. Recent animal studies support the role of fetal ethanol experience-induced chemosensory plasticity as contributing to this observation. Surgery alone is curative for most children with localized MYCN-non-amplified neuroblastoma. We believe this to be the first case of life-threatening paraneoplastic syndrome (PNS) in a child with undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver (UESL). We report a case of a 9-year-old child with UESL believed to be unresectable at presentation, who experienced life-threatening, refractory long QTc syndrome, Torsades de pointes, fevers of unknown origin, and secretory diarrhea necessitating emergency surgery. After failure of intravenous immunoglobulin and high-dose steroids to control PNS and despite pancytopenia from chemotherapy, very aggressive surgical resection was life saving and led to rapid resolution of PNS.

Methods: This study reports on curriculum development and evaluation of a 3-day, clinically oriented patient safety intersession that was implemented at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in January 2011. Using simulation, skills demonstrations, small group exercises and case studies, this intersession focuses on improving students' teamwork and communication skills and system-based thinking while teaching on the causes of preventable harm and evidence-based strategies for harm prevention.

Differences between the psychosocial risk factors of low back pain (LBP) patients in primary and secondary care are under-investigated. Similarly, differences in the psychosocial profile of people classified into STarT Back Screening Tool (SBT) subgroups in primary and secondary care settings have not been investigated. Irradiation dynamics of a single graphene sheet bombarded by hydrogen atoms is studied in the incident energy range of 0.1 to 200 eV. Results for reflection, transmission, and adsorption probabilities, as well as effects of a single adsorbed atom to the electronic properties of graphene, are obtained by the quantum-classical Monte Carlo molecular dynamics within a self-consistent-charge-density functional tight binding formalism We compare these results with those, distinctly different, obtained by the classical molecular dynamics.

Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) and hydrogen (H(2)) crystallize into a 'guest-host' structure at 3.5 GPa and, at the initial formation pressure, the rotationally disordered component molecules exhibit weak van der Waals-type interactions. With increasing pressure, hydrogen bonding develops and strengthens between neighboring H(2)S molecules, reflected in a pronounced drop in S-H vibrational stretching frequency and also observed in first-principles calculations.

This phenomenon occurs when a tortuous elongated external iliac artery segment is artificially straightened by an iliac stent resulting in kinking and compression of a redundant loop with lumen compromise.
