Article Synopsis
  • Intra-operative wound irrigation is commonly used in orthopaedic surgeries to prevent surgical site infections (SSIs), but its effectiveness, particularly with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), is unclear.
  • A clinical trial conducted in Nigeria involved 50 patients divided into two groups: one received CHG and the other isotonic saline, with early SSIs monitored for 30 days post-surgery.
  • The study found no significant difference in SSI rates between the two groups, suggesting that both methods are equally effective, which could help improve patient care and resource management in low-resource settings.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic occlusive disease of the lower extremities and is associated with an increased risk of amputation and cardiovascular events. The interplay between diabetes and PAD is complex, influenced by shared risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, and smoking. High rates of undiagnosed diabetes, coupled with barriers to accessing care, contribute to the complexity of managing PAD.
