Humpback whales undertake one of the longest known migrations of any mammal. While their migration route generally extends between latitudes, the breeding stocks are longitudinally separated and display high site fidelity to their feeding grounds. While there is an indication of certain breeding stocks overlapping with each other, the current information on the migration routes of humpback whales within the Southern Hemisphere limits our understanding of the extent of this exchange.

Literature on Group One organoelement chemistry is dominated by lithium, though sodium and potassium also feature prominently, whereas rubidium and caesium are rarely mentioned. With recent breakthroughs hinting that organoelement compounds of these two heavier metals can perform better than their lighter congeners in particular applications, important advantages could be missed unless complete sets of alkali metals are included in studies. Here, we report the synthesis and characterisation of a complete set of multi-alkali-metallated molecular compounds of the 1,3,5-tris[(4,6-dimethylpyridin-2-yl)aminomethyl]-2,4,6-triethylbenzene framework.

Oral delivery of peptides requires formulations with high concentrations of permeation enhancer (PE) to promote absorption, and often necessitates fasting time between dosing and food ingestion. Improved formulations promoting a more rapid absorption would increase convenience of use but requires a faster onset of action. We have developed a salcaprozate-based ionic liquid (IL) formulation, namely choline salcaprozate (CHONAC), for oral delivery of a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue via gastric absorption.

Background: In response to activated patient communities' catalyzation, two significant efforts by the FDA to expedite treatments have now been in place for multiple decades. In 1983, the United States Congress passed the Orphan Drug Act to provide financial incentives for development of drugs for rare diseases. In 1992, partly in response to the HIV epidemic, the FDA implemented Accelerated Approval (AA) to expedite access to promising new therapies to treat serious conditions with unmet medical need based on surrogate marker efficacy while additional clinical data is confirmed.

Controlling polymorphism, namely, the occurrence of multiple crystal forms for a given compound, is still an open technological challenge that needs to be addressed for the reliable manufacturing of crystalline functional materials. Here, we devised a series of 13 organic crystals engineered to embody molecular fragments undergoing specific nanoscale motion anticipated to drive cooperative order-disorder phase transitions. By combining polarized optical microscopy coupled with a heating/cooling stage, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, low-frequency Raman spectroscopy, and calculations (density functional theory and molecular dynamics), we proved the occurrence of cooperative transitions in all the crystalline systems, and we demonstrated how both the molecular structure and lattice dynamics play crucial roles in these peculiar solid-to-solid transformations.

Poverty is a carcinogen and a leading cause of cancer disparities and overall mortality in the United States. Poverty is often viewed as an individual failure for "being poor," but in fact, poverty is structurally driven, intergenerational, and place-based that socially deprives and denies human potential. Disparities in timely cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and survival disproportionally impact people living in poverty and especially in persistent poverty areas, an extreme form of place-based poverty that affects communities over multiple generations.

This report provides a summary of the identified evidence gaps and a general discussion of the next steps to advance cancer epidemiology research in Hispanic/Latino (H/L) populations based partly on the workshop, "Cancer Epidemiology in Hispanic Populations," convened by the NCI in September 2021. The cancer burden among H/L populations varies greatly by nativity and country of origin, yet this variation is not often captured due to systemic challenges in how racial/ethnic data have been collected and often reported in aggregate for this heterogeneous population. Developing culturally relevant assessment tools, increasing the representation of H/L participants, and adopting appropriate methodologic approaches are critical to enhancing cancer research.

The duration and magnitude of haematological changes following non-targeted low-dose radiation have not been well explored. We previously reported that low-dose radiation (150 mGy 2x/week for 5 consecutive weeks) was well tolerated by participants (n = 15) with minimal toxicities and no changes in quality of life. Leukocytes, platelets and erythrocytes decreased from baseline measurement 12 months following treatment, however changes were not clinically significant.

Several recent studies have investigated the validity of precautionary practices for lymphedema risk reduction after breast cancer treatment, such as avoidance of blood pressure measurements, skin puncture, blood draws, and use of prophylactic compression during air travel. Other studies have elucidated risk factors for breast cancer-related lymphedema, such as axillary lymph node dissection and skin infection (cellulitis). Combining the current evidence base with the consensus opinion of lymphatic experts assembled at the American Cancer Society/Lymphology Association of North America Summit in October 2023, updated evidence-based risk reduction recommendations are presented for those with or at risk of breast cancer-related lymphedema.

Article Synopsis
  • Repeated addition of activated carbon (AC) to sand caps over PCB-contaminated sediment can help reduce PCB bioaccumulation in sheepshead minnows, especially when the ongoing sediment input is also contaminated.
  • However, adding AC increased PCB uptake in fish when the sediment input was clean, with a significant 79% rise in bioaccumulation over the first 60 days.
  • The findings suggest the need for careful timing and considerations of the remediation process, as the effectiveness may vary based on the quality of sediment input.

Objective: Cervical cancer results from persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) and the expression of E6 and E7 oncoproteins. E6 and E7 compromise the activity of p53 and Rb, the G1-S cell cycle checkpoint, and ATM-mediated DNA damage repair (DDR), which in turn increases reliance on ATR- and PARP-mediated DDR at the G2 cell cycle checkpoint. This study aimed to determine the effects of an ATR inhibitor (ATRi, AZD6738) and a PARP-inhibitor (PARPi, AZD2281) on HR-HPV+ cervical cancer cell lines.
