Article Synopsis
  • The study explored new imaging criteria using maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) to predict less-invasive lung adenocarcinoma stages IA2-IA3.
  • A retrospective analysis of 364 patients with tumors under 3 cm was conducted, with results showing varying sensitivity and specificity based on tumor characteristics and size when using an SUVmax cutoff of 2.2.
  • Ultimately, establishing the SUVmax cutoff could help identify pathologically less-invasive cancers in the specified stages of solid predominant lung adenocarcinoma.

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) has become a standard procedure for performing coronary intervention, but its impact on peripheral endovascular therapy (EVT) remains unclear. To assess the usefulness of IVUS during EVT, this study analyzed over 2000 consecutive patients from the TOkyo-taMA peripheral vascular intervention research COmraDE (TOMA-CODE) registry with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in Japan. The primary outcome was chronic limb events (a composite of clinically driven target lesion revascularization (cTLR) and major amputation) during a two-year follow-up period.

Background: With the advent of effective chemotherapy, conversion surgery (CS) has been performed in patients who have responded to pretreatment, even for pancreatic cancer diagnosed as unresectable (UR) at the time of initial diagnosis. In CS, major arterial resection and reconstruction are necessary for complete radical resection.

Methods: We discuss the key points for safely performing pancreatectomy with celiac axis (CA) resection combined with reconstruction, divided into resection and arterial reconstruction.

Robotic probe manipulator for echocardography (echo) can potentially reduce cardiac radiologists' physical burden. Echo procedure with industrial robots has wide Range of Motion (RoM) but poses safety risks because the robot may clamp the patient against the bed. Conversely, a soft robotic manipulator for echo has safe contact force but suffers from a limited RoM.

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is a multifactorial regulator involved in many biological responses. Alternative splicing of STAT3 pre-mRNA leads to an internal 50-nucleotide deletion of exon 23 selecting an alternative 3' acceptor site, resulting in the generation of two splicing isoforms, STAT3α and STAT3β. STAT3β lacks 55 amino acid-residue transactivation domain at the C-terminal of STAT3α replacing seven unique amino acids.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary mediastinal apocrine adenocarcinoma is exceptionally rare, with just one documented case prior to this report, involving a 51-year-old female undergoing hemodialysis.
  • A 19 mm anterior mediastinal cystic tumor was discovered via CT scan, which was surgically removed and showed no signs of spreading to other organs.
  • The tumor exhibited unique microscopic features and immunohistochemical markers, and the patient has been recurrence-free for 6 years post-surgery without any additional treatment.

Objective: Post-surgical survival outcomes in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) are expected to be worse than those in patients with other idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIPs). However, these remain unclear regarding patients with NSCLC and IPF histologically diagnosed as usual interstitial pneumonia [IPF(UIP)]. We aimed to assess the surgical and survival outcomes and identify prognostic factors in patients with NSCLC and IPF(UIP).

  • The JCOG0802/WJOG4607L trial showed segmentectomy is better than lobectomy for overall survival in small-peripheral non-small-cell lung cancer, but locoregional relapse (LR) is still a concern.
  • An analysis of 1105 patients with various tumor sites determined that factors like solid tumor appearance and close margins significantly increased the risk of LR after segmentectomy.
  • Key findings stress the importance of using thin-section CT scans and ensuring sufficient margin distance to minimize the risk of LR in patients undergoing segmentectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) and warfarin in patients after noncardiac thoracic surgery from 2008 to 2021.
  • It included 434 patients, revealing low rates of thromboembolic events (0.4% for DOACs vs. 1.6% for warfarin) and similar bleeding occurrences (1.6% for DOACs and 2.1% for warfarin).
  • Although outcomes were similar, the research highlights that major bleeding can happen soon after starting DOACs post-surgery, emphasizing careful monitoring when resuming these medications.

Article Synopsis
  • STAT3 is an important factor in various biological processes, notably gene transcription related to cytokines, growth factors, and cancer signaling, with two main isoforms (STAT3α and STAT3β) influenced by alternative splicing.
  • Recent research identifies distinct functions of these isoforms in cellular processes like differentiation and inflammation, but the mechanisms behind STAT3 pre-mRNA splicing and factors affecting STAT3β expression are not well understood.
  • The study revealed that entinostat, a histone deacetylase inhibitor, can induce the expression of STAT3β by altering mRNA splicing, highlighting its potential for further research into the role of STAT3 isoforms in biological responses linked to the JAK/STAT3 signaling

Purpose: We assessed the safety of general thoracic surgery in patients with prior coronary stents undergoing lung resection, based on differences in perioperative antiplatelet therapy management.

Methods: We retrospectively examined 150 patients with coronary artery stents who underwent pulmonary resection between July 2009 and July 2018. The impact of the antiplatelet agent on thoracic surgery safety was assessed by comparing perioperative outcomes, including major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events, among the discontinued antiplatelet therapy (group D), heparin bridging (group H), and continuous antiplatelet therapy (group C) groups.

Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide despite advances in cancer therapeutics. In several gynecological cancers, anti-Müllerian hormone receptor type 2 (AMHR2) mediates AMH-induced growth inhibition and is expressed at high levels. Furthermore, 5%-8% of NSCLCs exhibit high AMHR2 expression, suggesting that AMH may inhibit the progression of some lung cancers.

Background: Previous reports have shown comparable outcomes between drug-eluting stents (DESs) and drug-coated balloons (DCBs) for treating femoropopliteal artery (FPA) lesions; however, DCB outcomes include approximately 10% to 50% bailout stents. Therefore, comparing DESs and DCBs is not simple. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of DESs and DCBs in patients with symptomatic FPA disease.
