A 70-year-old woman underwent conservative treatment for abscess-forming appendicitis. Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) have been a very controversial tumor, and there is a lack of standardization for the optimal surgical procedure due to the infrequency of this disease. This is the first case report of duplicate appendix complicated by LAMN. The preoperative imaging examinations revealed that the mucinous tumor was shrinking spontaneously, allowing for safe laparoscopic resection.

The overexpression of rice BSR2 would offer a simple and effective strategy to protect plants from multiple devastating diseases in tomato and Arabidopsis. Many devastating plant diseases are caused by pathogens possessing a wide host range. Unlabelled: The plant pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum uses a large repertoire of type III effector proteins to succeed in infection. To clarify the function of effector proteins in host eukaryote cells, we expressed effectors in yeast cells and identified seven effector proteins that interfere with yeast growth. One of the effector proteins, RipAY, was found to share homology with the ChaC family proteins that function as γ-glutamyl cyclotransferases, which degrade glutathione (GSH), a tripeptide that plays important roles in the plant immune system.

Betaine uptake is induced by hypertonic stress in a placental trophoblast cell line, and involvement of amino acid transport system A was proposed. Here, we aimed to identify the subtype(s) of system A that mediates hypertonicity-induced betaine uptake. We found that Japanese peach cultivars have two types of mutation in a carotenoid catabolic gene, CCD4: the insertion of a retrotransposon, and a frame shift in the microsatellite sequences of the first exon. Substrate-induced upregulation of ATP-binding cassette subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) has been well studied in cancer cells, but it is also important to understand whether ABCG2 is upregulated by its substrates in tissues in which it is constitutively expressed. In the present study, we aimed to clarify the regulatory mechanism of Abcg2 expression by its substrate, mitoxantrone, in placental cells. Abcg2 mRNA expression in rat placental TR-TBT 18d-1 cells treated with 10 μM mitoxantrone for 24 h was increased, compared with that in nontreated cells, whereas 10 μM pheophorbide-a had no effect.

The 11-Gbps 80-km transmission performance of a zero-chirp silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator has been characterized. The zero-chirp characteristic of the silicon modulator is confirmed in the constellation measurement, and gives high tolerance both for positive and negative chromatic dispersion. A low-dispersion-penalty transmission up to 80 km using the 11-Gbps non return-to-zero on-off-keying format is confirmed via bit-error-rate measurements with a performance comparable to that of a commercial lithium-niobate modulator.

Plants have developed certain adaptive responses to environmental stresses that cause adverse effects on growth. To identify genes involved in the adaptive mechanisms, we constructed a large population of transgenic Arabidopsis expressing rice full-length cDNAs, and performed gain-of-function screening under high-salinity stress. In this study, we identified a rice R2R3-type MYB transcription factor gene, JAmyb, as a gene whose overexpression causes tolerance to high salinity.

A laticifer is a cell involved in plant defense against biotic stresses such as herbivores and microorganisms; however, its gene expression is poorly understood. We compared protein accumulation and transcriptomes among laticifers of lignified and unlignified organs of mulberry (Morus alba), which has a non-articulated, branched type of laticifer. LA-a (equivalent to MLX56) and its homolog LA-b (insecticidal chitinase-like proteins containing two chitin-binding domains) were major proteins in laticifers of unlignified organs, and another protein (LA-c) was a major protein in laticifers of lignified organs.
