Clinical effect of naftopidil on the quality of life of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia: a prospective study.

Objectives: To investigate the benefit of alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonist naftopidil on the quality of life (QOL) of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH/LUTS).

Methods: A total of 99 men with BPH/LUTS were prospectively recruited. The Short Form-8 (SF-8) was used for generic QOL assessment and each parameter was compared with the norm in these patients.

Combination of gemcitabine and paclitaxel as second-line chemotherapy for advanced urothelial carcinoma.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and toxicities of the gemcitabine and paclitaxel combination regimen as second-line chemotherapy for patients with advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma (UC) who have previously been treated with platinum-based chemotherapy for the metastatic disease.

Methods: Thirty-three patients with advanced or metastatic UC who had received platinum-based chemotherapy were treated with an outpatient gemcitabine and paclitaxel combination regimen. A dose of 180 mg/m(2) paclitaxel was administered by intravenous (IV) infusion on Day 1, and 1000 mg/m(2) gemcitabine was administered by IV on Days 1, 8 and 15.

Clinical effect of alpha 1D/A adrenoceptor inhibitor naftopidil on benign prostatic hyperplasia: an international prostate symptom score and King's Health Questionnaire assessment.

Objectives: To examine the effect of alpha 1D/A adrenoceptor inhibitor naftopidil on health-related quality of life (QOL) in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Methods: A total of 56 newly diagnosed patients with symptomatic BPH were prospectively enrolled and treated with 50 mg naftopidil daily for more than 12 weeks. All underwent pre-treatment documentation of lower urinary tract symptoms, QOL assessment using the international prostate symptom score (IPSS) and King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ), and uroflowmetry.

[Predicting blood loss during radical prostatectomy using internal pelvimetry].

We retrospectively evaluated the possibility of predicting estimated blood loss (EBL) in 39 consecutive patients undergoing retropubic radical prostatectomy (RRP) using pelvimetry under a single surgeon at our institution from April 2004 to March 2006. For pelvimetry, the area of pelvic entrance (APE) and view of prostatic apex (VPA) were evaluated using preoperative images. Other perioperative data were also recorded, including the patient's age, prostate specific antigen (PSA), body mass index (BMI), use of neoadjuvant hormonal therapy, operative time and pathological data (such as pathological T factor and specimen weight).

Cystine transport activity of heterozygous rBAT mutants expressed in Xenopus oocytes.

The rBAT gene encodes a transport protein for cystine and dibasic amino acids. It is a candidate gene for type I cystinuria, a genetic disorder inherited as an autosomal-recessive trait. Recently, several mutations in rBAT from Japanese patients with cystinuria have been reported from our laboratory.
