The number of patients with diabetic nephropathy is increasing worldwide and it is important to understand the underlying pathological mechanisms of the disease. In early stage diabetic nephropathy, the hyperglycemic environment leads to vascular endothelial cell damage, resulting in overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in podocytes and renal pathology of glomerular hypertrophy, glomerular basement membrane thickening, and mesangial hyperplasia. In diabetic nephropathy, renal thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) develops and the nephropathy progressively worsens in some cases of severe glomerular podocyte damage.

Background: Progression of aortic calcification is associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in hemodialysis patients. Blood calciprotein particle (CPP) levels are associated with coronary artery calcification and were reported to be inhibited when using citric acid-based bicarbonate dialysate (CD). Background: Genus Desulfovibrio species is a sulphate-reducing anaerobic gram-negative rod that resides in the human oral cavity and intestinal tract. It was reported as the causative pathogen of bacteraemia and abdominal infections, but not renal cyst infection, and Desulfovibrio fairfieldensis has higher pathogenicity than other Desulfovibrio species.

Background: The importance of crescent formation in glomerulonephritis has increased. However, detailed analysis of crescentic glomerulonephritis in Asia is scarce. The intracellular trafficking pathway of albumin in podocytes remains controversial. We therefore analysed albumin endocytosis through caveolae, subsequent transcytosis, and exocytosis. In Western blot and immunofluorescence analysis in vitro, methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (MBCD) treatment significantly decreased the expression of caveolin-1 and albumin in cultured human podocytes after incubation with albumin; additionally, MBCD interfered with albumin endocytosis through caveolae in the experiment using Transwell plates.

The Oxford classification of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) can evaluate each MEST-C score individually. We analysed a new grading system that utilised the total MEST-C score in predicting renal prognosis. Altogether, 871 IgAN patients were classified into three groups using the new Oxford classification system (O-grade) that utilised the total MEST-C score (O-grade I: 0-1, II: 2-4, and III: 5-7 points), and the 10-year renal prognosis was analysed.

Background: Tonsillectomy may treat IgA nephropathy (IgAN) by reducing the levels of galactose-deficient IgA1. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the long-term effects of tonsillectomy on patients with IgAN, as an initial treatment and as a treatment at any time in their lives.

The hormone fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is secreted from bone and is involved in phosphorus (P) metabolism. FGF23 mainly binds the FGF receptor, which interacts with αKlotho in the kidney or parathyroid and regulates Na-dependent phosphate co-transporter type IIa (NaPi-IIa) and type IIc (NaPi-IIc) expression, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) activity, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion. Aim: This study aimed to examine the roles of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and soluble Klotho in phosphate metabolism in autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) patients.

Methods: We measured these two factors and phosphate metabolism parameters in 80 patients with ADPKD and 53 patients with non-diabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Results: The mean serum FGF23 level in the ADPKD group was significantly (twofold) higher than in the non-diabetic CKD patients, but the mean soluble Klotho level in the ADPKD group was significantly lower in the non-diabetic CKD group.

We report a patient treated with rituximab for interstitial pneumonia (IP) associated with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and who was undergoing hemodialysis. A 59-year-old woman who had been treated with tacrolimus for 1 year for rheumatic arthritis was referred to the Department of Nephrology for fatigue, fever, weight loss, and rapidly developing renal dysfunction. On the first admission, severe renal dysfunction, proteinuria, hematuria, and an elevated titer of MPO-ANCA were observed, and the woman was diagnosed with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis because of MPA.

Fossil fuel combustion is the second largest anthropogenic source of nitrous oxide (N2O) after agriculture. The estimated global N2O flux from combustion sources, as well as from other sources, still has a large uncertainty. We demonstrate the use of an aldehyde scrubber system to resolve isobaric aldehyde/alkene interferences in a proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS) by selectively removing the aldehydes from the gas mixture without loss of quantitative information for the alkene components. The aldehyde scrubber system uses a bisulfite solution, which scrubs carbonyl compounds from the gas stream by forming water-soluble carbonyl bisulfite addition products, and has been evaluated using a synthetic mixture of acrolein and isoprene. Trapping efficiencies of acrolein exceeded 97%, whereas the transmission efficiency of isoprene was better than 92%.

We examined therapeutic gene transfer of human hepatocyte growth factor (hHGF) to alveolar septa in mouse bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis using macroaggregated albumin-polyethylenimine complex (MAA-PEI). Intravenous administration of MAA-PEI along with 1 microg pCAG.hHGF to C57BL/6 mice increased the uptake of plasmids into alveolar capillary endothelial cells and epithelial cells, prolonged hHGF expression in the lung, and induced a level of hHGF expression equal to that seen with 10 microg of hHGF-expression plasmids alone.

Immune activation and inhibitory receptors play an important role in the maintenance of an adequate activation threshold of various cells in our immune system. Analyses of murine models show that the inhibitory Fcreceptor, FcgammaRIIB plays an indispensable role in the suppression of anti-body-mediated allergy and autoimmunity. In contrast, the activating-type Fcreceptors (FcRs) are essential for the development of these diseases, suggesting that regulation of inhibitory or activating FcR is an ideal target as a therapeutic agent.
