Ghrelin is a peptide hormone with various important physiological functions. The unique feature of ghrelin is its serine 3 acyl-modification, which is essential for ghrelin activity. The major form of ghrelin is modified with n-octanoic acid (C8:0) by ghrelin O-acyltransferase.

Article Synopsis
  • A 79-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) developed empyema while being treated with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) as part of triple therapy.
  • After diagnosing the infection through pleural effusion culture, the treatment was modified, reducing the therapy to a double combination without ICS.
  • The patient's condition improved significantly, allowing for his discharge after 49 days in the hospital, suggesting that ICS may increase the risk of infection in COPD patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome occurs when uterine fibroids lead to complications, such as fluid accumulation in the chest.
  • A 48-year-old woman experienced respiratory difficulties after starting treatment with GnRH agonists for her fibroids, resulting in massive pleural effusion and ascites.
  • After undergoing a total laparoscopic hysterectomy, her condition improved, confirming the diagnosis of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome linked to her uterine fibroids.

A lung cancer coexists with non-caseous epithelioid granulomas (NEG) in the same lesion is uncommon. A 62-year-old female was referred to our hospital for examination of a right lung S3 nodule which was recently increasing in its size. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) examination revealed positive signals at the S3 nodule as well as mediastinal lymph nodes, apex of heart and right pleura.

If the electroweak sector of the standard model is described by classically conformal dynamics, the early Universe evolution can be substantially altered. It is already known that-contrarily to the standard model case-a first-order electroweak phase transition may occur. Here we show that, depending on the model parameters, a dramatically different scenario may happen: A first-order, six massless quark QCD phase transition occurs first, which then triggers the electroweak symmetry breaking.

Bis-cyclometalated cationic iridium (Ir) complexes 1-4 comprising two 2-(2-pyridyl)benzo[b]thiophene (btp) ligands and one 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy) ancillary ligand with different substituents were prepared as new visible light-absorbing sensitizers and examined for their photophysical and electrochemical properties. Complex 1 was prepared as a parent complex without any substituents. Complexes 2-4 contained methyl-, methoxy-, and trifluoromethyl groups at 4,4'-positions on the bpy ancillary ligand.
