Examining the adequacy of preoperative informed consent in a developing country: Challenges in the era of surgical specialisation.

Preoperative informed consent is a legal and ethical requirement that ensures patients understand a procedure, its associated risks and benefits, alternative treatment options, and potential complications to make an informed decision about their care. This cross-sectional study evaluated the informed consent process for major orthopaedic surgeries at a tertiary hospital in Nigeria. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 adult participants.

A comparison of the use and non-use of closed suction wound drainage in open reduction and internal fixation of femoral shaft fractures.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine if the routine use of closed suction wound drainage is justified following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of femoral shaft fractures.

Method: This was a prospective comparative study of two study groups: those with post-operative closed suction drainage (WCSD) and those not with closed suction drainage (NWCSD).

Results: Fifty-six patients, twenty-eight each for the two cohorts, were recruited for this study.

Priapism in homozygous sickle cell patients: important clinical and laboratory associations.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the occurrence of priapism and important steady-state clinical and laboratory parameters in homozygous sickle cell disease (SCD).

Subjects And Methods: Steady-state clinical and laboratory data were obtained from the medical records of 126 male patients seen in the clinic over a 7-year period. Estimated prevalence rates, correlation coefficients and independent t tests were calculated to assess the relationship between priapism and several important clinical and laboratory indices.

Evaluation of clinical and laboratory correlates of sickle leg ulcers.

The exact mechanism for the occurrence of sickle leg ulcers (SLUs) has not been fully explained, although, popular opinion supports a multifactorial etio-pathogenetic process. Leg ulceration in sickle cell is a chronic and debilitating condition which is difficult to treat and may worsen the psychosocial impact of this illness. This study aims to evaluate the laboratory and clinical correlates of SLUs.
