This article describes the development and psychometric testing of a 43-item nurse residency program stakeholder evaluation. The valid and reliable survey provides nursing professional development practitioners with insight into opportunities to improve nurse residency program design and educational content. Survey results may also substantiate human and capital resources required for effective programs.

Uncontrolled noise in the hospital setting can have a negative physiological and psychological impact on patients and nurses. To reduce unit noise levels and create a quiet patient and nurse experience, an evidence-based practice project was conducted in 4 progressive care units in a community hospital. The Quiet Time Bundle implementation improved patient satisfaction and patient and nurse perceptions of noise even though the decrease in noise levels may not be discernible.

A localized intrauterine inflammatory response is often associated with the initiation of normal human parturition, whereas infection causes a similar but more florid response initiating preterm labor. Pre-B-cell colony-enhancing factor (PBEF) is expressed in the human fetal membranes and is up-regulated by labor, severe infection and inflammatory stimuli. The aim of this study was to determine the involvement of the transcription factors NF-kappaB and AP-1 in the response of PBEF to an inflammatory stimulus and compare it with IL-8.

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are soluble ligands important for embryonic patterning, limb and brain development, and stem cell proliferation. They activate specific receptors (FGFR) to elicit changes in gene expression and cellular responses such as proliferation, differentiation, and survival, but the extent to which these pleiotropic responses are driven by FGF concentration gradients has not been systematically addressed. Here, we show that a single cell type exhibits divergent, even opposing, responses to a single FGF dependent on the exposure concentration, and that this is controlled by differential signaling with specific negative feedback inhibition.

Neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) contributes to axon growth and guidance during development and learning and memory in adulthood. Although the Ig domains mediate homophilic binding, outgrowth activity localizes to two membrane proximal fibronectin-like domains. The first of these contains a site identified as a potential FGF receptor (FGFR) activation motif (FRM) important for NCAM stimulation of neurite outgrowth, but its activity has hitherto remained hypothetical.

Mechanisms of expression of long-term synaptic plasticity are believed to involve morphological changes of the activated synapses and remodelling of connectivity. Here, we investigated changes in synaptic and neuronal parameters in the dentate gyrus 24 h after induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) in awake rats. In dentate granule cells, tetanization of the medial or lateral perforant paths induces LTP in specific synaptic bands along the dendrites in the middle and outer molecular layers, respectively, and tetanization of the lateral path induces robust LTD heterosynaptically in the middle molecular layer.

We describe the thorough characterisation of a new transgenic mouse line overexpressing the 695-amino acid isoform of human amyloid precursor protein harbouring the Swedish double familial Alzheimer's disease mutation. This line, referred to as TAS10, exhibits neuropathological features and cognitive deficits that are closely correlated to the accumulation of Abeta in their brain and that are reminiscent of those observed in AD. Data on the TAS10 line are presented at five time points: 2, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months in a longitudinal study.
