Background: The purpose of surgeries performed for congenital anomalies in children is to increase the survival rates and provide a developmental comparison to that of their peers.

Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the development of children following surgery for congenital anomalies and the risk factors affecting their development.

Methods: Our study included 33 children who underwent surgery for gastrointestinal anomalies in our clinic between 2011 and 2016, and did not have any syndrome, chromosomal abnormality, or additional abnormality.

Hypospadias and the Use of the Ages and Stages Questionnaire to Evaluate Neurodevelopmental Status of Boys with Hypospadias.

Introduction:  Placental insufficiency is one of the reasons for the reduction of hormone production. Thus, if one of the suspected causes of hypospadias is placental insufficiency, then the neurodevelopmental status of boys with hypospadias may be impaired. The aim of this study was to evaluate the neurodevelopmental status of boys with hypospadias and guide the parents of those who need support to related departments for early intervention.

Muramyl Tripeptide Plus Chemotherapy Reduces Metastasis in Non-Metastatic Osteosarcoma: A Single-Center Experience.

Background: The immunomodulator mifamurtide plus a chemotherapy regimen has been shown to significantly improve the outcome in non-metastatic osteosarcoma patients. We report the results of the addition of mifamurtide to chemotherapy in newly diagnosed patients with osteosarcoma.

Methods: A total of 36 children with osteosarcoma without detectable metastasis were treated between November 2010 and April 2018 at the Ankara University Department of Pediatric Oncology.

Background/aims: Hydatid disease remains an important global socioeconomic health problem, particularly in the endemic areas. Although half of the patients show no symptoms, hydatid cysts should be treated because of their fatal complications. The aim of this study is to present the long-term results of percutaneous treatment of hydatid disease using the Örmeci technique.

A comparative evaluation of migration sedimentation method for sperm preparation.

The effectiveness of semen preparation using the migration-sedimentation (MS) method was evaluated, and compared to density gradient centrifuge and swim-up combination (DGC+SU). Sperm selection using MS is based on motility, thus, deleterious effects for which centrifugation has been blamed, are believed to be avoided. Normozoospermic male patients who had more than 10% forward progressive motile sperm in their ejaculate were included in the study.

Investigating the role of IL-33 in the pathogenesis of Behçet's Disease.

Objectives: Behçet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory disease, characterized by oral aphthous lesions, recurrent uveitis, skin lesions, and genital ulcerations. Prognostic Significance of Standardized Uptake Value on Fluorine-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography in Patients with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of standardized uptake value (SUV) on 18 fluorine-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Thirty-four patients who have histologically proven NPC and underwent F-FDG PET/CT were included in this study. After F-FDG PET/CT, all the patients received radiation therapy and 32 of them received concomitant weekly chemotherapy.

Effects of postoperative parenteral nutrition with different lipid emulsions in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.

Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the effects of total parenteral nutrition (PN) using different lipid emulsions in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.

Methods: Fifty-two patients were randomized to receive soybean oil + medium chain triglycerides (MCT) (group I), soybean oil + olive oil (group II), soybean oil + olive oil + fish oil (group III) as a lipid source. PN was started on postoperative day 1 and patients were maintained on PN for a minimum period of 4 days.

The aim of this study was to compare the graft patency rates among patients who had a previous history of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) followed by coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG) with the patients who had experienced CABG surgery alone. The 69 patients who were included in the study had a history of bare metal stent implantation prior to CABG (group 1). The coronary angiography results were compared with 69 patients who had a previous history of CABG (group 2).

The seroprevalence of Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpes virus and human herpes virus-6 in pediatric patients with cancer and healthy children in a Turkish pediatric oncology center.

Background: Many studies have tried to be establish a pathogenic role for human herpesvirus-6 and -8 (HHV-6, HHV-8) in malignant diseases, but whether these viruses plays a role in these pathologies remains unclear. HHV-6 and HHV-8 seropositivity were shown in a healthy population. There is no published data in Turkey about seroprevalence of these viruses.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of male and female cigarette smoking on the outcomes of in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Influence of blood collection systems on coagulation tests.

Objective: Coagulation tests are influenced by pre-analytic conditions such as blood collection systems. Change of glass collection tubes with plastic ones will cause alteration of the test results. The aim of this study was to compare three plastic blood collection tubes with a standard glass blood collection tube and each plastic collection tube with the other two for possible additional tube-to- tube differences.

The outcome of bifocal surgical resection in non-small cell lung cancer with synchronous brain metastases: results of a single center retrospective study.

Background: The reported median survival in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) metastases to the brain varies from 3 to 12 months with combined treatment modalities. Bifocal surgical resection of synchronous brain metastasis and primary NSCLC has not been reported widely, and there have been only a small number of articles published in the literature. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the prognostic factors among patients undergoing bifocal surgical resection.

Methods: Patients were grouped according to the International Classification of Retinoblastoma. For intraocular retinoblastoma, group E and some group D eyes underwent primary enucleation.

Serum connective tissue markers as predictors of advanced fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B and D.

Background/aims: Liver biopsy to assess fibrosis is invasive and prone to sampling error. While algorithms of serum markers to predict fibrosis stage have been described for chronic hepatitis C, these cannot be applied equally well to hepatitis B.

Methods: We therefore determined 9 serum fibrosis markers, liver biochemical tests and ultrasound parameters in 109 consecutive adult patients with chronic hepatitis B and D.
