Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a devastating disease with poor prognosis due to limited clinical treatment options. IPF is characterized by the augmented deposition of extracellular matrix driven by myofibroblasts, and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) has been known to play an essential role in the mechanism of pulmonary fibrosis. Previous genome-wide association study identified Fam13a as one of genes that showed genetic link with IPF and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Among several morphological changes involving the ascending aorta, elongation is characteristics of elderly patients with aortic stenosis and can compromise the success and safety of TAVI. However, the effect of ascending aortic elongation on the overall morphology of the proximal aorta has not been established.

Here we show that endothelial cell (EC) senescence induces metabolic disorders through the senescence-associated secretory phenotype. Senescence-messaging secretomes from senescent ECs induced a senescence-like state and reduced insulin receptor substrate-1 in adipocytes, which thereby impaired insulin signaling.

Recently, we established a simple, high-throughput, cell-free assay to evaluate the capacity of HDL to accept additional cholesterol, which is herein referred to as "cholesterol uptake capacity (CUC)".
Objective: To clarify the cross-sectional relationship between CUC and coronary plaque properties.

Methods: We analyzed data from our previous prospective multicenter study, in which we investigated the effect of the SGLT2 inhibitor dapagliflozin on LV diastolic functional parameters of T2DM patients with stable HF at five institutions in Japan. Echocardiography was performed at baseline and 6 months after administration of dapagliflozin.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension can be associated with exposure to certain drugs or toxins. However, only a few cases of drug-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension have been previously reported. Anagrelide is an oral imidazoquinazoline agent that is prescribed for reducing elevated platelet counts in patients with myeloproliferative disorders.

However, it has lower penetration depth than intravascular ultrasound. Recently, a second-generation optical frequency-domain imaging (OFDI) technique has been developed to provide greater penetration depth and faster pullback speed.

Additionally, pulmonary balloon angioplasty (BPA) is widely performed for chronic thromboembolic PH (CTEPH).
Methods: To elucidate the long-term prognosis and the prognostic factors among all five subtypes of PH in this new era, we examined the current status of management of PH from November 2012 to April 2016 in the multicenter registry by the Japanese Pulmonary Circulation Society.
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major cause of heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), usually presenting as left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction. Thus, LV diastolic function should be considered a crucial marker of a preclinical form of DM-related cardiac dysfunction. However, the impact of glycemic variability (GV) on LV diastolic function in such patients remains unclear.

Echocardiography and cardiac computed tomography revealed localized severe pericardial calcification surrounding the basal segments of both ventricles, which caused pericardial constriction. Right heart catheter examination confirmed typical hemodynamic findings of constrictive pericarditis and subsequently led to the definite diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis.

This study aimed to compare the lesion characteristics and tissue temperature profiles between 20 W (20 Ws) and 40 W (40 Ws) ablation settings under the same AI and LSI.
Methods: An ex vivo model consisting of swine myocardium (5-6 mm thickness) in a circulating, warmed saline bath was used.
A 72-year-old woman was referred to our institution with decompensated congestive heart failure owing to subacute severe aortic regurgitation and mitral regurgitation. Her blood sample tested positive for myeloperoxidase anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA). Cardiac computed tomography revealed abnormal thickening and shortening of the aortic valvar leaflets as well as wall thickening of the sinuses of Valsalva.

We investigated the prospective association between serum elaidic acid (trans 18:1 n-9) levels, as an objective biomarker for industrial trans fat, and incident dementia and its subtypes.
Methods: In total, 1,628 Japanese community residents aged 60 and older without dementia were followed prospectively from when they underwent a screening examination in 2002-2003 to November 2012 (median 10.
A 41-year-old man with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) underwent radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation using an online real-time phase mapping system: ExTRa Mapping. Box isolation could not terminate AF. Subsequently, RF applications on nonpassively activated areas (NPAs), where rotational activations were frequently observed, at the posterior bottom of left atrium outside of box lesion could convert AF to common atrial flutter.

Methods: This study was designed as a prospective, multicenter, observational study and a total of 2113 patients from 22 institutions were enrolled in the Hyogo area.
Results: The mean age and CHADS score were 70.
Background: The underlying mechanism of mitral regurgitation (MR) in atrial fibrillation (AF) is an isolated annulus dilation caused by left atrial (LA) remodeling. However, the association of mitral valve (MV) geometry with MR in AF patients remains unclear.
Methods and results: We studied 96 AF patients with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
We present a patient with non-cardiac sarcoidosis complicated with manifest ventricular preexcitation. Initially, cardiac involvement of sarcoidosis was suspected from the echocardiographic findings showing localized hypokinesia at the left ventricular basal inferior wall. We, however, considered that the hypokinesia was a preexcitation-induced mechanical dyssynchrony rather than cardiac sarcoidosis, because polarities of the delta-waves indicated a left ventricular inferior accessory pathway.

However, the clinical significance of the circulating EL fragments remains unclear.
Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of serum EL fragments on HDL-C levels and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).
Background: Left ventricular (LV) longitudinal myocardial systolic dysfunction (LVSD) has been identified in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, and it should be considered the first marker of a preclinical form of DM-related cardiac dysfunction. Overweight has been postulated to contribute to the development of LVSD in T2DM patients, but the impact of amount of body fat mass on LVSD in T2DM patients remains uncertain.
Methods: We studied 71 asymptomatic T2DM patients with preserved LV ejection fraction (LVEF) (all ≥55%) without coronary artery disease.
Aims: We aimed to assess the effect of 10 mg/day of rosuvastatin plus eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) versus 2.5 mg/day of rosuvastatin on the extent of neoatherosclerosis using optical coherence tomography (OCT).
Methods And Results: We randomly assigned 50 patients with non-obstructive neoatherosclerotic plaques detected on OCT to receive either rosuvastatin 10 mg/day and EPA 1,800 mg/day (intensive therapy group) or rosuvastatin 2.
Introduction: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) lesions after cryoballoon ablation (CBA) are wide and continuous, however, the distribution can depend on the pulmonary vein (PV) size. We sought to assess the relationship between the lesion distribution and PV size after CBA and hotballoon ablation (HBA).
Methods And Results: A total of 80 consecutive patients who underwent PVI were enrolled (40 with CBA).
An 80-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis presented with chest pain. Clinical examination revealed new-onset paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with symptomatic sinus pauses and worsening mitral regurgitation, which were both resistant to conventional therapies. Based on her skin lesions, an increase in pleural and pericardial effusion, possible myocardial involvement, and a positive finding for immune complex testing, rheumatoid vasculitis was diagnosed.
