Social insects demonstrate adaptive behaviour for a given colony size. Remarkably, most species do this even without visual information in a dark environment. However, how they achieve this is yet unknown.

In nature, living creatures are affected by several stimuli simultaneously. The response of living creatures to stimuli is called taxis. In order to reveal the principles of taxis behavior in response to complex stimuli, we simultaneously applied photostimulation and electric stimulation perpendicularly to a Volvox algae solution.

The carrier/small interfering RNA (siRNA) complexes (N/P ratio of 20) had a particle size of approximately 50 nm and stabilized the siRNA against RNase. The cellular uptake ability of the carrier/FAM-siRNA complexes with fetal bovine serum was significantly higher than that of naked FAM-siRNA.

However, effective siRNA carriers need to be developed to overcome the low siRNA stability in vivo, to form stable complexes and to facilitate intracellular uptake. In this study, to develop a carrier for systemic siRNA delivery, we prepared methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG)/polycaprolactone (PCL) diblock copolymers conjugated with a cell-penetrating peptide, Tat, via a disulfide linkage, and evaluated their ability as an siRNA carrier.

STR-CH(2)R(4)H(2)C forms a nano-complex with pDNA and is stabilized by electronic interactions and disulfide cross linkages. In blood, pDNA, a cytosol-sensitive gene vector, is released from the complex into the cytosol.

We investigate the behavior of a single-cell protozoan in a narrow tubular ring. This environment forces them to swim under a one-dimensional periodic boundary condition. Above a critical density, single-cell protozoa aggregate spontaneously without external stimulation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA real-time quantitative-polymerase chain reaction (RQ-PCR) targeting the immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) gene has been used for the quantification of minimal residual disease (MRD) in B-cell hematological malignancies. In non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), experimental costs are increased, as a large number of primer-probe sets are required because of diversity, due to somatic and ongoing mutations of the IgH gene. We developed an allele-specific oligonucleotide (ASO) combined with a germline consensus probe-based RQ-PCR assay and examined MRD in peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC).
