Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore how systematic reviews of observational dental studies evaluated the methodological quality and risk of bias of primary studies, focusing on reporting practices in this area.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 3,214 potential documents, ultimately identifying 399 systematic reviews, with 368 reporting a specific methodological tool, such as the Newcastle-Ottawa scale.
  • - The findings indicate that a significant portion of reviews mentioned the tools used, while some reviews either did not specify any tool or reported a modified version, highlighting inconsistencies in methodological reporting.

We systematically characterized onset of expression of circadian genes in the embryonic eye and heart of tadpoles. We found that and ( were the first circadian genes to display significant 24-hour rhythms in the developing eye and heart in a 12-hour light-dark cycle (LD). Rhythmic expression of both oscillator and output genes were present in the eye by 2.

S-adenosyl-l-methionine-dependent methyltransferases (MTs) are involved in the C-methylation of a variety of natural products. The MTs SgvM from Streptomyces griseoviridis and MrsA from Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae catalyze the methylation of the β-carbon atom of α-keto acids in the biosynthesis of the antibiotic natural products viridogrisein and 3-methylarginine, respectively.

Most low-mass stars form in stellar clusters that also contain massive stars, which are sources of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. Theoretical models predict that this FUV radiation produces photodissociation regions (PDRs) on the surfaces of protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, which affects planet formation within the disks. We report James Webb Space Telescope and Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of a FUV-irradiated protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula.

The destruction time scale of dust in the diffuse interstellar medium is estimated to be an order of magnitude shorter than its residence time. Nevertheless, dust is observed in the interstellar medium, leading to the conclusion that reformation and grain growth must take place. Direct observations of nanometre-sized silicate grains, the main constituent of interstellar dust, would provide a smoking gun for the occurrence of grain condensation in the diffuse interstellar medium.

The personality trait of sensation seeking (SS) plays a prominent role in health-related risk behaviors and is associated with psychopathology, emotion regulation, and delinquency. Despite this high relevance, hardly any ultra-short self-report measures optimized for test duration exist for the assessment of SS. An exception is the Brief Sensation Seeking Scale (BSSS-4) consisting of four items, which is gaining international popularity.

Inorganic polyphosphate is a ubiquitous, linear biopolymer built of up to thousands of phosphate residues that are linked by energy-rich phosphoanhydride bonds. Polyphosphate kinases of the family 2 (PPK2) use polyphosphate to catalyze the reversible phosphorylation of nucleotide phosphates and are highly relevant as targets for new pharmaceutical compounds and as biocatalysts for cofactor regeneration. PPK2s can be classified based on their preference for nucleoside mono- or diphosphates or both.

A microfluidic chip approach utilising integrated electrically connected stationary SERS targets based on inkjet-printed silver nanoparticles is presented. It enables multiple interference-free consecutive surface-enhanced Raman measurements inside chip channels by electrically assisted regeneration of the stationary SERS substrate. Thereby it circumvents common adsorption and memory effect problems associated with stationary SERS targets allowing multiple consecutive measurements in a continuous-flow system.

Empirical evidence for an essential role of the hippocampal system in arbitrary visuo-motor mapping suggests that acquisition and retrieval of arbitrary visuo-motor mapping might be impaired in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The present pilot study investigated whether MCI of amnestic type or AD impact upon the capacity to scale grip force in a predictive manner to the mass of an object to be lifted based on learned associations between arbitrary colour cues and mass. Patients with MCI (n=8) and AD (n=8) grasped and lifted two different masses (400g and 600g) in random order using a precision grip between index finger and thumb.

Objective: Facilitation of cortical excitability of the ipsilesional primary motor cortex (M1) may improve dexterity of the affected hand after stroke. The effects of 10 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over ipsilesional M1 on movement kinematics and neural activity were examined in patients with subcortical or cortical stroke.

Methods: Twenty-nine patients with impaired dexterity after stroke (16 subcortical middle cerebral artery [MCA] strokes, 13 MCA strokes involving subcortical tissue and primary or secondary cortical sensorimotor areas) received 1 session of 10 Hz rTMS (5-second stimulation, 25-second break, 1,000 pulses, 80% of the resting motor threshold) applied over: 1) ipsilesional M1 and 2) vertex (control stimulation).

The objective of this study is to investigate whether subjects with Parkinson's disease are able to use arbitrary color cues linked to the mass of an object to be lifted allowing for the predictive selection of appropriate grip forces. Fourteen patients with Parkinson's disease used a precision grip to lift two objects of different masses (400 and 600 g) in random order. In a "no cue" condition, a noninformative neutral visual stimulus was presented before each lift, thereby not allowing any judgement about which mass to be lifted.

Background: Until recently, gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has increasingly replaced iodinated contrast agent examinations in dialysis patients, although only limited data existed about the clinical safety of Gd contrast agents in these patients. Specific clinical adverse events (AEs), including nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, were linked to Gd exposure in dialysis patients. An inflammatory reaction or transmetallation may be involved.

Introduction: Viscosupplementation by repeated intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid (HA) is used widely in the treatment of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA). The number of injections required can limit the availability of treatment and affect patient compliance. The aim of this study was to assess different dosing regimens of hylan G-F 20, a high molecular-weight cross-linked derivative of HA, in the treatment of pain due to knee OA.

New pharmacological and clinical studies show that standardized willow bark extracts (WRE) is not only the natural form of salicylic acid. Willow bark extract has comparable antiinflammatory activities as higher doses of acetylsalicylic acid (ASS), and it shows antinociceptive and antipyretic activities. Under the pharmacologically active doses, no adverse effects regarding the stomach mucosa was observed, in contrast to acetylsalicylic acid.

Carbonates on large Solar System bodies like Earth and Mars (the latter represented by the meteorite ALH84001) form through the weathering of silicates in a watery (CO3)2- solution. The presence of carbonates in interplanetary dust particles and asteroids (again, represented by meteorites) is not completely understood, but has been attributed to aqueous alteration on a large parent body, which was subsequently shattered into smaller pieces. Despite efforts, the presence of carbonates outside the Solar System has hitherto not been established.

Post-marketing-surveillance studies with herbal drugs usually are prospective prescription-epidemiological studies, which should allow statements on quality, efficacy and safety. Until now neither laws nor concrete normative guidelines for the methodology and the evaluation of post-marketing-surveillance studies are existing which could be used for pharmacovigilance. In the present paper guidelines for planning, realisation and evaluation are presented which should allow studies of high quality.
