Physicochemical Properties, Antioxidant Capacity and Bioavailability of Whey Protein Concentrate-Based Coenzyme Q10 Nanoparticles.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a powerful antioxidant. However, the poor water solubility and low bioavailability still remain challenges for its application. An embedded delivery system of CoQ10 based on whey protein concentrate (WPC) and polymerized whey protein concentrate (PWPC) was prepared, and the physicochemical properties, antioxidant capacity and bioavailability were characterized in this study.

Pre-trained Convolutional Neural Networks Identify Parkinson's Disease from Spectrogram Images of Voice Samples.

Machine learning approaches including deep learning models have shown promising performance in the automatic detection of Parkinson's disease. These approaches rely on different types of data with voice recordings being the most used due to the convenient and non-invasive nature of data acquisition. Our group has successfully developed a novel approach that uses convolutional neural network with transfer learning to analyze spectrogram images of the sustained vowel /a/ to identify people with Parkinson's disease.

Care of the Transgender Surgical Client: A Video Simulation for Baccalaureate Nursing Students.

Background: Nursing curriculum lacks content addressing care of transgender (trans) individuals. Gender diversity in health care education must be enhanced to prevent discrimination and systemic biases.

Method: A shared session between pediatric and medical-surgical courses using an interactive video simulation facilitated student preparation to provide inclusive care for trans surgical clients.

Factors Influencing Speech-Language Pathology Referral and Utilization in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: An Exploratory Analysis.

Purpose: Speech-language pathologists provide important services to people recovering from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), also called concussion, although they may be underutilized in outpatient care. Because health care providers face challenges in selecting assessments to efficiently describe patient needs, the purpose of this study was to describe factors related to patients receiving speech-language pathology services after mTBI, as well as how assessments predict amount of services received.

Method: In this retrospective chart review study, demographic factors, injury characteristics, and assessment scores were extracted from medical records of patients aged 14-65 years receiving services for recent (within 6 months) mTBI at an outpatient specialty clinic.

Background And Objective: Highly variable pain mechanisms in people with low back pain or spine-related leg pain might contribute to inefficacy of neuropathic pain medication. This meta-analysis aimed to determine how neuropathic pain is identified in clinical trials for people taking neuropathic pain medication for low back pain or spine-related leg pain and whether subgrouping based on the presence of neuropathic pain influences efficacy.

Family Planning Among Canadian Plastic Surgeons and Trainees.

Despite increasing advocacy for family leave policies, few studies have described the current landscape and attitudes around family planning in Canadian plastic surgery. The purpose of this study was to survey Canadian plastic surgeons and trainees to examine their experience with family planning, parental leave, and breastfeeding. An anonymized survey was distributed to all members of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons and all Canadian Plastic Surgery residents through their program administrators.

Neutron imaging of the deuterium-tritium tamping gas volume in an inertial confinement fusion hohlraum.

To benchmark the accuracy of the models and improve the predictive capability of future experiments, the National Ignition Facility requires measurements of the physical conditions inside inertial confinement fusion hohlraums. The ion temperature and bulk motion velocity of the gas-filled regions of the hohlraum can be obtained by replacing the helium tamping gas in the hohlraum with deuterium-tritium (DT) gas and measuring the Doppler broadening and Doppler shift of the neutron spectrum produced by nuclear reactions in the hohlraum. To understand the spatial distribution of the neutron production inside the hohlraum, we have developed a new penumbral neutron imager with a 12 mm diameter field of view using a simple tungsten alloy spindle.

CONTACT: a non-randomised feasibility study of bluetooth-enabled wearables for contact tracing in UK care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: The need for effective non-pharmaceutical infection prevention measures such as contact tracing in pandemics remains in care homes, but traditional approaches to contact tracing are not feasible in care homes. The CONTACT intervention introduces Bluetooth-enabled wearable devices (BLE wearables) as a potential solution for automated contact tracing. Using structured reports and reports triggered by positive COVID-19 cases in homes, we fed contact patterns and trends back to homes to support better-informed infection prevention decisions and reduce blanket application of restrictive measures.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of fast electron heating in solid-density matter via XFEL.

High-intensity, short-pulse lasers are crucial for generating energetic electrons that produce high-energy-density (HED) states in matter, offering potential applications in igniting dense fusion fuels for fast ignition laser fusion. High-density targets heated by these electrons exhibit spatially non-uniform and highly transient conditions, which have been challenging to characterize due to limitations in diagnostics that provide simultaneous high spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we employ an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) to achieve spatiotemporally resolved measurements at sub-micron and femtosecond scales on a solid-density copper foil heated by laser-driven fast electrons.

Attempted Transmission of Marburg Virus by Bat-Associated Fleas (Ischnopsyllidae: Thaumapsyllinae) to the Egyptian Rousette Bat ().

Egyptian rousette bats (ERBs) are implicated as reservoir hosts for Marburg virus (MARV), but natural mechanisms involved in maintenance of MARV in ERB populations remain undefined. A number of hematophagous ectoparasites, including fleas, parasitize bats. Subcutaneous (SC) inoculation of ERBs with MARV consistently results in viremia, suggesting that infectious MARV could be ingested by blood-sucking ectoparasites during feeding.

Experiences of Acquired Brain Injury as Expressed Through Mask-Making: A Qualitative Analysis.

Purpose: Acquired brain injury (ABI) extends beyond the immediate aftermath, and understanding individual experience of ABI is paramount to providing effective support mechanisms. This study examined how people with ABI used mask-making to engage in self-expression.

Method: Publicly available data from the Unmasking Brain Injury Project website, an advocacy group for people with ABI, were analyzed.

Efficacy and acceptability of interventions to reduce antipsychotic polypharmacy: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

Background: Antipsychotic polypharmacy (APP) is frequent but evidence-based guidelines on reducing APP to antipsychotic monotherapy (APM) are sparse. We aimed to systematically review clinical interventions randomizing patients to reducing APP to APM versus continuing APP.

Methods: Systematic literature review searching Medline and Embase (latest search January 10, 2024) for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) studying interventions comparing individuals randomized to reduction of APP to APM with individuals continuing on APP.

Synthesis of 1H-isoindolin-1-ones via a simple photodecarboxylative addition of carboxylates to phthalimides and evaluation of their antibiotic activity.

A variety of 3-hydroxy-isoindolin-1-one derivatives were synthesized using the photodecarboxylative addition of carboxylates to phthalimide derivatives in aqueous media. Subsequent acid-catalyzed dehydration furnished 3-(alkyl and aryl)methyleneisoindolin-1-ones with variable E-diastereoselectivity in good to excellent overall yields. Noteworthy, the parent 3-phenylmethyleneisoindolin-1-one underwent isomerization and oxidative decomposition when exposed to light and air.

Thriving in the wake of a storm: A systematic qualitative review & meta-synthesis on facilitating post-traumatic growth in patients living with Acquired Brain Injury.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) often results in significant challenges, yet it may also facilitate Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG). This review explores a critical question: "What are the main factors contributing to PTG following ABI, and what potential barriers to its development are perceived by ABI survivors?" Here we aim to systematically uncover these contributors and barriers to PTG through a meta-synthesis, involving a comprehensive review of previously published qualitative research on this topic. A literature search was conducted across PsycINFO, CINAHL, and MEDLINE up to December 2022 to identify studies for inclusion.

Feasibility of regional center telehealth visits utilizing a rural research network in people with Parkinson's disease.

Background: Impaired motor and cognitive function can make travel cumbersome for People with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). Over 50% of PwPD cared for at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Movement Disorders Clinic reside over 30 miles from Little Rock. Improving access to clinical care for PwPD is needed.

Mixed-methods feasibility outcomes for a novel ACT-based video game 'ACTing Minds' to support mental health.

Objectives: To determine the feasibility and acceptability of 'ACTing Minds', a novel single-player adventure video game based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

Design: A single-arm, mixed-methods repeated measures feasibility study.
