: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potent drivers of psychopathology and neurological disorders, especially within minoritized populations. Nonetheless, we lack a coherent understanding of the neuronal mechanisms through which ACEs impact gene expression and, thereby, the development of psychopathology. : This observational pilot study used a novel marker of neuronal functioning (brain-derived micro ribonucleic acids, or miRNAs) collected via saliva to explore the connection between ACEs and neuronal gene expression in 45 adolescents with a collectively high ACE exposure (26 males and 19 females of diverse races/ethnicities, with six cumulative ACEs on average).

"Breath holding" as a thermoregulation strategy in the deep-diving scalloped hammerhead shark.

Fish moving between different thermal environments experience heat exchange via conduction through the body wall and convection from blood flow across the gills. We report a strategy of preventing convective heat loss at the gills during excursions into deep, cold water by the tropical scalloped hammerhead shark (). Adult scalloped hammerhead sharks dive rapidly and repeatedly from warm (~26°C) surface waters to depths exceeding 800 meters with temperatures as low as 5°C.

Observations of a species-record deep dive by a central Pacific female scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini).

A female scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) conducted a species record deep dive to 1240 m in coastal-pelagic waters off Hawaii Island. This extends the deepest known depth range of the species by over 200 m (650 ft) and highlights the question of the extent to which deep-diving activity is mediated by physiological constraints, such as temperature and oxygen availability.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is known to contribute to deficits in executive functioning (EF). Executive functioning abilities are disrupted in adolescents with either conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder, collectively known as disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs). There is little research on the relationship between executive dysfunction and DBDs in a group with a confirmed history of TBI.
