Hereditary protein S (PS) deficiency is a rare condition associated with increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). In 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic prompted development of vaccinations to protect against the virus. PS deficiency is not a contraindication to COVID-19 vaccinations, but there are no studies regarding potential adverse effects in this population.

While social workers have the capacity and scope of practice to make a significant contribution to pain management, little is understood about how they enact these roles. The initial goal of this scoping review was to examine the role of social work in pain management specifically in bleeding disorder care. Due to lack of published data on this topic, the review goal was broadened to chronic disease.

This case illustrates the acute onset of life-threatening bleeding in a 57-year-old male with treatment-resistant metastatic prostate cancer. Laboratory results confirmed the presence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Despite aggressive transfusion support, his consumptive coagulopathy and persistent bleeding could not be controlled, and his need for blood products began to outpace the available supply.
