Comparison of cell block preparation methods for nongynecologic ThinPrep specimens.

The purpose of this study was to compare four cell block (CB) methods in the setting of nongynecologic ThinPrep (TP) specimens. 48 CBs were prepared from 12 nongynecologic TP specimens using the following CB methods: (1) Inverted filter sedimentation (IFS); (2) Thrombin method; (3) Albumin method; (4) Simple sedimentation. Each CB was assigned a cellularity score: 0 no cells, 1+ hypocellular, 2+ hypocellular with tissue fragments, 3+ cellular.

Aggressive histiocytic disorders that can involve the skin.

Histiocytoses are a heterogeneous group of disorders that are characterized by the proliferation and accumulation of reactive or neoplastic histiocytes. Three classes of histiocytoses have been defined: class I, Langerhans cell disease; class II, non-Langerhans cell histiocytic disease without features of malignancy; and class III, malignant histiocytic disorders. Although the disorders in classes I and II usually have a benign appearance on histology and are commonly non-aggressive and self-healing, some can cause debilitating or even fatal outcomes.

Molecular genetic evidence for the independent origin of multifocal papillary tumors in patients with papillary renal cell carcinomas.

Purpose: In patients with papillary renal cell carcinoma, it is not uncommon to find two or more anatomically distinct and histologically similar tumors at radical nephrectomy. Whether these multiple papillary lesions result from intrarenal metastasis or arise independently is unknown. Previous studies have shown that multifocal clear cell renal cell carcinomas express identical allelic loss and shift patterns in the different tumors within the same kidney, consistent with a clonal origin.

Performance of an automated immature granulocyte count as a predictor of neonatal sepsis.

Neonatologists use immature granulocytes (IG) in manual differential counts as an indicator of sepsis. This study was designed to compare the predictive ability of automated vs manual IG counts for neonatal sepsis. Infants undergoing sepsis evaluation were identified prospectively for study if a CBC count was obtained in temporal proximity to the blood culture.

c-kit Expression in small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder: prognostic and therapeutic implications.

The prognosis for small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is poor, and strategies for improved therapy are needed. Targeted therapy against the c-kit proto-oncogene has been successful in the management of gastrointestinal stromal tumor. We investigated the expression of c-kit in 52 cases of small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder: a clinicopathologic analysis of 64 patients.

Background: Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is an uncommon tumor that has been described in case reports or small series. Herein, the authors report a series of 64 patients with small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Methods: Histologic slides and medical records from 64 patients with small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder were reviewed for morphologic, demographic, and clinical data.
