Neutrophils are short-lived cells of the innate immune system and represent 50-70% of the circulating leucocytes. Their primary role is antimicrobial defence which they accomplish through rapid migration to sites of inflammation followed by phagocytosis, degranulation and the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETosis). While previously considered terminally-differentiated cells, they have been shown to have great adaptability and to play a role in conditions ranging from cancer to autoimmunity.

To determine which features of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus might underpin this local disease epidemiology, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the genomic epidemiology of the four dominant strains of SARS-CoV-2 (Alpha, Iota, Delta, and Omicron) responsible for COVID-19 cases in the Bronx between March 2020 and January 2023. Genomic analysis revealed similar viral fitness for Alpha and Iota variants in the Bronx despite nationwide data showing higher cases of Alpha.

Rabex-5 (also called RabGEF1), a protein originally characterized for its Rab5 GEF function, also has an A20-like E3 ubiquitin ligase domain. We and others reported that Rabex-5 E3 activity promotes Ras mono- and di-ubiquitination to inhibit Ras signaling in Drosophila and mammals. Subsequently, we reported that Rabex-5 inhibits Notch signaling in the Drosophila hematopoietic system.

Here, we report a magnetogenetic system, based on a single anti-ferritin nanobody-TRPV1 receptor fusion protein, which regulated neuronal activity when exposed to magnetic fields. Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated delivery of a floxed nanobody-TRPV1 into the striatum of adenosine-2a receptor-Cre drivers resulted in motor freezing when placed in a magnetic resonance imaging machine or adjacent to a transcranial magnetic stimulation device. Functional imaging and fiber photometry confirmed activation in response to magnetic fields.

We evaluated the efficacy of the Fast Expectation Maximization (FEAST) microbial source tracking (MST) algorithm to apportion sources of faecal contamination among four mammalian species of interest in coastal waters in New Zealand. Many concussion symptoms (eg, headache, dizziness) are not visible, meaning that early identification is often contingent on individuals reporting their injury to medical staff. A fundamental understanding of the types and levels of factors that explain when concussions are reported can help identify promising directions for intervention.

Planned oocyte cryopreservation (OC) has the potential to address the burden of the biological clock, giving women and individuals with ovaries more autonomy in choosing when to have children and with whom. In the United States, the annual number of OC cycles has grown significantly, yet many questions remain regarding planned OC. The field is starting to gather data on the clinical practice and social perspectives around planned oocyte cryopreservation, including the optimal age range at which to offer planned OC, what factors are most predictive of a successful outcome, and the optimal number of oocytes and ovarian stimulation cycles to achieve a live birth.
