Clavines and D-lysergic acid-derived alkaloid amides and alkaloid peptides are two different families of compounds that have the indole-derived tetracyclic metergoline ring system in common. Previous work has shown that D-lysergic acid is biosynthetically derived from clavine alkaloids. Recent cloning and analysis of the ergot alkaloid biosynthesis gene cluster from the D-lysergic acid peptide (ergopeptines)-producing Claviceps purpurea, has shown that it most probably contains all genes necessary for D-lysergic acid synthesis as well as those that encode the assembly of D-lysergic acid peptides, such as ergotamine.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) from mouse bone marrow were shown to adopt a pancreatic endocrine phenotype in vitro and to reverse diabetes in an animal model. The recent identification of large deposits of sulphates by remote sensing and in situ observations has been considered evidence of the past presence of liquid water on Mars. Here we report the unambiguous detection of diverse phyllosilicates, a family of aqueous alteration products, on the basis of observations by the OMEGA imaging spectrometer on board the Mars Express spacecraft. These minerals are mainly associated with Noachian outcrops, which is consistent with an early active hydrological system, sustaining the long-term contact of igneous minerals with liquid water.

On the basis of white-light interferometry with spectrally integrated detection and Fourier transform (FT) analysis, we demonstrate a novel technique for measuring the spectrally-resolved absolute phase difference between orthogonal optical modes with milliradian precision. The phase difference is evaluated from a nonlinear beat signal, occurring in the phase spectrum when independent interferograms, formed by individual modes, are recorded simultaneously. Although scanning white-light FT interferometry is a linear technique in general, the nonlinear beat signal is due to spectral amplitude variations in each mode.

We calculate pulse self-compression of a 30 fs laser pulse traversing gas with different pressure gradients. We show that an appropriate density profile brings significant improvement to the self-compression by filamentation. Under an optimal pressure gradient, the pulse duration is reduced to the single optical cycle limit over a long distance, allowing easy extraction into an interaction chamber.

We present a general approach for the measurement of the properties of optical pulses by exploiting features of the optical carrier domain. We demonstrate the principle of a novel balanced detection scheme that avoids the difficulties associated with homodyne detection in the baseband used in linear optical sampling methods so far. The residual timing instability of the repetition rate synchronization between mode-locked lasers is measured with the new detection technique.

We report the production of frequency-sheared high harmonics in argon by control of the envelope and chirp of the electric field of the femtosecond driving laser pulse. Using the classic three-step model of high-harmonic generation, we established a direct link between the properties of the harmonics and the fully characterized driving pulses. A simulation of the single-atom response in the strong-field approximation confirms the simple picture and shows good agreement with the experimental results.
