Objectives: We sought to compare survival after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in high-risk anatomic subsets.

Background: Compared with medical therapy, CABG decreases mortality in patients with three-vessel disease and two-vessel disease involving the proximal left anterior descending artery (LAD), particularly if left ventricular (LV) dysfunction is present. In apicomplexan parasites, host cell adhesion and subsequent invasion involve the sequential release of molecules originating from secretory organelles named micronemes, rhoptries, and dense granules. Microneme proteins have been shown to be released at the onset of the initial contact between the parasite and the host cell and thus mediate and establish the physical interaction between the parasite and the host cell surface. This interaction most likely involves adhesive domains found within the polypeptide sequences of most microneme proteins identified to date.

In the Ascomycete fungus Aspergillus nidulans, the ratio of conidia (asexual spores) to ascospores (sexual spores) is affected by linoleic acid moieties including endogenous sporogenic factors called psi factors. Deletion of odeA (Delta odeA), encoding a Delta-12 desaturase that converts oleic acid to linoleic acid, resulted in a strain depleted of polyunsaturated fatty acids (18:2 and 18:3) but increased in oleic acid (18:1) and total percent fatty acid content. Linoleic acid-derived psi factors were absent in this strain but oleic acid-derived psi factors were increased relative to wild type.

As part of the SENTRY Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Program, a total of 4998 strains of enterococci isolated from 1997 to 1999 were processed. The occurrence of enterococcal infections by species and site of infection was analyzed, as were the occurrence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and their resistance phenotypes and genotypes. Trends in antimicrobial susceptibility to a variety of agents (including experimental compounds) were also reported.

Echinocandin B (ECB), a lipopolypeptide used as a starting material for chemical manufacture of the anti-Candida agent LY303366, is produced by fermentation using a strain of Aspergillus nidulans. In addition to ECB, the wild-type strain also produces a significant level of sterigmatocystin (ST), a potent carcinogen structurally related to the aflatoxins. Characterization of a mutant designated A42355-OC-1 (OC-1), which is blocked in ST biosynthesis, was the result of a chromosomal translocation.

Background: Surgery involving cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is frequently accompanied by a systemic inflammatory response partly triggered by neutrophils and monocyte-macrophages. Certain cytokines that are powerful leukocyte-chemotactic factors have recently been characterized and shown to be important in evoking inflammatory responses: monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) has monocyte-macrophage chemotactic activity, and regulated-upon-activation normal T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES) has a potent chemoattractant activity for mononuclear phagocytes. This prospective cohort study investigated possible roles of these chemokines in the inflammatory response to CPB and relationships between the changes in chemokine levels and the clinical course and outcome.

Studies in healthy subjects showed that blood coagulation factor VII (FVII) is activated postprandially after consumption of high-fat meals, but accompanying thrombin formation has not been demonstrated. In patients with coronary atherosclerosis, the arterial intima is supposed to present more tissue factor, the cofactor of FVII, to circulating blood; therefore, thrombin formation in response to FVII activation is more likely to occur in such patients. This hypothesis was tested in a randomized crossover study of 30 patients (aged 43 to 70 years) with stable angina pectoris and angiographically verified coronary atherosclerosis.
