Aim: Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (DD), a common finding in the general population, is considered to be associated with heart failure with preserved ejection faction (HFpEF). Here we evaluate the prevalence and correlates of DD in subjects with and without HFpEF in a middle-aged sample of the general population.

Methods And Results: From the first 10,000 participants of the population-based Hamburg City Health Study (HCHS), 5913 subjects (mean age 64.

As patents for the biologic agents reach their expiration dates, dermatologists must prepare for the coming of biosimilars. These agents have been deemed "highly similar" to their reference products in a process outlined by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In 2016, the FDA approved 3 biosimilars for various indications including plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

The biologic agent ustekinumab is a human monoclonal antibody that binds to the p40 subunit shared by interleukins (ILs) 12 and 23. The antibody is able to prevent binding of cytokines to the IL-12Rβ1 cell surface receptor and therefore may prevent IL-23 driven activation of the IL-23/Th 17 axis of inflammation. The anti-inflammatory activity has been beneficial in adult psoriasis.

Article Synopsis
  • Rosacea is rare in children, so it's important to rule out other skin disorders, as children may show different symptoms, including both skin and eye-related issues.
  • Ocular symptoms can show up first, which can complicate diagnosis since rosacea is usually confirmed through clinical observation and may require a biopsy to identify specific skin changes.
  • Management includes avoiding triggers and using medications, but it's common for pediatric rosacea to continue into adulthood despite treatment effectiveness.

Object: While most meningiomas are benign, 1%-3% display anaplastic features, with little current understanding regarding the molecular mechanisms underlying their formation. In a large single-center cohort, the authors tested the hypothesis that two distinct subtypes of anaplastic meningiomas, those that arise de novo and those that progress from lower grade tumors, exist and exhibit different clinical behavior.

Methods: Pathology reports and clinical data of 37 patients treated between 1999 and 2012 for anaplastic meningioma at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) were retrospectively reviewed.

Four patients with progressive visual deterioration were found to have sarcoidosis involving the anterior visual pathway. They all developed chiasmal dysfunction and bilateral optic neuropathy, which responded to megadose corticosteroid therapy. When an attempt was made to withdraw the corticosteroids, the patients experienced a recrudescence of visual dysfunction and were subsequently unable to tolerate the corticosteroid dose levels necessary to maximise their visual potential.

Unilateral peripheral sixth nerve palsy associated with an ipsilateral postganglionic Horner's syndrome has previously been described. Isolated bilateral sixth nerve palsy due to a pontine hemorrhagic lesion, however, is a rare occurrence. We describe such a case whose only other neurological finding was a unilateral preganglionic Horner's syndrome.

Argon laser photocoagulation is an effective surgical modality in the management of open-angle glaucoma. Twenty-two eyes with open-angle glaucoma were treated. Approximately 50 burns of 50 micron spot size were applied to the anterior trabeculum over the inferior 180 degrees of the angle.
