Comparison of search and rescue operations involving emergency physicians in devastating earthquakes in Turkey: a 24-year experience study.

Background: In the 21st century, disasters (particularly earthquakes, which remain the leading cause of death) continue to be among the foremost issues requiring global emergency response. While the impact of advancing technologies on the environmental and human damage caused by earthquakes is still a subject of debate, search and rescue (SAR) teams and emergency departments (ED), specifically emergency physicians (EPs), play a crucial role in the most acute management of the effects of these earthquakes on human life. This study aims to examine the injury dynamics of two catastrophic earthquakes that occurred in Turkey 24 years apart from the perspective of EPs, utilizing archival records from the SAR teams in which EPs served.

The role of irisin and cytokines in the etiology of parotid tumors.

This study explores the role of irisin and interleukins in parotid tumors by determining the tissue staining intensity of irisin, the salivary and plasma levels of irisin, and the plasma levels of IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-alpha in individuals with parotid tumors. Forty-eight patients and forty healthy individuals were included to the study and allocated into four group. Benign Group I (pleomorphic adenoma), Group II (Warthin's tumor), Group III (mucoepidermoid carcinoma) and Group IV (benign parotid control group, healthy control group).

Large-scale multi-center CT and MRI segmentation of pancreas with deep learning.

Automated volumetric segmentation of the pancreas on cross-sectional imaging is needed for diagnosis and follow-up of pancreatic diseases. While CT-based pancreatic segmentation is more established, MRI-based segmentation methods are understudied, largely due to a lack of publicly available datasets, benchmarking research efforts, and domain-specific deep learning methods. Background: Postoperative pain is a serious problem in gynecological oncology patients. Rectus sheath block (RSB) is increasingly utilized as a part of multimodal analgesia. The purpose of this three blinded, randomized-controlled trial is to compare the analgesic efficacy of ultrasound-guided (US-guided) bilateral rectus sheath block (BRSB) and local anesthetic wound infiltration (LAWI) application in patients undergoing midline laparotomy for gynecologic cancer.

Background/aim: Phthalates are the materials used for plasticizing polyvinyl chloride. Di-(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is one of the phthalates most frequently used in a wide range of applications, including medical equipment such as endotracheal and feeding tubes, intravenous catheters, central lines, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation sets, total parenteral nutrition bags, blood product sets, and intravenous pump lines, respiratory sets in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Studies have shown that phthalates, including DEHP, can cross the placenta and blood-brain barrier, possibly leading to neurodevelopmental impairment in vitro and in vivo.

Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the factors associated with anemia among pregnant women attending a tertiary referral hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Methods: An unmatched case-control study was conducted on pregnant women who visited the antenatal clinics of a tertiary referral hospital between March and July 2021. The study recruited pregnant women who had a hemoglobin level of <11 g/dL into the anemic group, while those with hemoglobin levels ≥11 g/dL were included in the non-anemic group.

Robust and heritable knockdown of gene expression using a self-cleaving ribozyme in Drosophila.

The current toolkit for genetic manipulation in the model animal Drosophila melanogaster is extensive and versatile but not without its limitations. Here, we report a powerful and heritable method to knockdown gene expression in D. melanogaster using the self-cleaving N79 hammerhead ribozyme, a modification of a naturally occurring ribozyme found in the parasite Schistosoma mansoni.

Methods: This retrospective study examined the results of serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D tests of 28,125 patients admitted to Somalia Mogadishu-Turkey Training and Research Hospital between January 2017 and December 2021. Vitamin D insufficiency is defined as 20-30 ng/mL, deficiency as 10-19 ng/mL, and severe deficiency as <10 ng/mL.
