Captive-breeding programs can be implemented to preserve the genetic diversity of endangered populations such that the controlled release of captive-bred individuals into the wild may promote recovery. A common difficulty, however, is that programs are founded with limited wild broodstock, and inbreeding can become increasingly difficult to avoid with successive generations in captivity. Program managers must choose between maintaining the genetic purity of populations, at the risk of inbreeding depression, or interbreeding populations, at the risk of outbreeding depression.

Role of computed tomographic angiography in treatment of patients with temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

Purpose: To evaluate the use of preoperative computed tomographic angiography (CTA) and selective embolization as an ancillary tool for the treatment of patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis.

Materials And Methods: The present study was a case series of subjects with bilateral TMJ ankylosis who had undergone preoperative CTA and surgical release with immediate reconstruction. The indications for CTA were either an intimate association between the vessels and the ankylotic mass on the facial computed tomography (CT) scan or a history of multiple previous TMJ operations.

Longitudinal evaluation of neurobehavioral outcomes after carotid revascularization.

Background: Carotid revascularization, including carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS), is performed for stroke risk reduction but may also impact cognitive function. Cognitive outcomes observed after carotid revascularization have been inconsistent, and mechanistic relationships with procedural factors are poorly understood. To further explore associations between carotid revascularization and cognitive outcomes, a prospective longitudinal evaluation was conducted of patients undergoing elective CEA or CAS for hemodynamically significant carotid stenosis.

For selected geriatric patients with end-stage kidney failure, kidney transplantation has emerged as a potential option for treatment of their end organ failure. Aging is associated with functional changes to the immune system known as immunosenescence, and this age-related decline in immune function has important implications for immunosuppression in this subgroup of kidney transplant recipients.

The circadian timing system influences a vast array of behavioral responses. Substantial evidence indicates a role for the circadian system in regulating reward processing. Here we explore time of day effects on drug anticipation, locomotor activity, and voluntary methamphetamine (MA) and food intake in animals with ad libitum food access.

Scientific foundations for an IUCN Red List of ecosystems.

An understanding of risks to biodiversity is needed for planning action to slow current rates of decline and secure ecosystem services for future human use. Although the IUCN Red List criteria provide an effective assessment protocol for species, a standard global assessment of risks to higher levels of biodiversity is currently limited. In 2008, IUCN initiated development of risk assessment criteria to support a global Red List of ecosystems.

Objectives: To determine whether a text message reduces the severity of patient self-reported levels of pain and anxiety following initial placement of orthodontic appliances.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-nine orthodontic patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups and matched for age, gender, and bracket type (self-ligating vs conventional). The subjects completed baseline questionnaires to ascertain their levels of pain and anxiety before initiating orthodontic treatment.

Reduced pulmonary surfactant interaction of daptomycin analogs via tryptophan replacement with alternative amino acids.

Daptomycin was shown to interact in vitro with pulmonary surfactant leading to reduction of its antibacterial activity. We report herein the preparation and anti-staphylococcal activity of a series of daptomycin analogs with reduced pulmonary surfactant interaction by replacing tryptophan with various amino acids.

An air-liquid contactor for large-scale capture of CO2 from air.

We present a conceptually simple method for optimizing the design of a gas-liquid contactor for capture of carbon dioxide from ambient air, or 'air capture'. We apply the method to a slab geometry contactor that uses components, design and fabrication methods derived from cooling towers. We use mass transfer data appropriate for capture using a strong NaOH solution, combined with engineering and cost data derived from engineering studies performed by Carbon Engineering Ltd, and find that the total costs for air contacting alone-no regeneration-can be of the order of $60 per tonne CO(2).

Background: Most surgical critical care literature reflects practices at trauma centers and tertiary hospitals. Surgical critical care needs and practices may be quite different at nontrauma center teaching hospitals. As acute care surgery develops as a component of surgical critical care and trauma, the opportunities and challenges of the nontrauma centers should be considered.

Melittin initiates dopamine transporter internalization and recycling in transfected HEK-293 cells.

The dopamine transporter removes the neurotransmitter from the synapse, regulating dopamine availability. The transporter can be internalized and its function is blocked by cocaine and other ligands. Melittin inhibits dopamine transporter function and causes internalization of the recombinant transporter in stably transfected HEK-293 cells, but the specific pathways for internalization and disposition of the transporter are unknown.

Age and gender dependent bioavailability of R- and R,S-α-lipoic acid: a pilot study.

Lipoic acid (LA) shows promise as a beneficial micronutrient toward improving elder health. Studies using old rats show that (R)-α-LA (R-LA) significantly increases low molecular weight antioxidants that otherwise decline with age. Despite this rationale for benefiting human health, little is known about age-associated alterations in absorption characteristics of LA, or whether the commercially available racemic mixture of LA (R,S-LA) is equally as bioavailable as the naturally occurring R-enantiomer.

Purpose: Maternal breast milk is considered the nutritional "gold standard" for all infants, especially premature infants. However, preterm mothers are at risk of not producing adequate milk. Multiple factors affect the production of milk, including stress, fatigue, and the separation of the breastfeeding dyad-for example, when mother or infant is hospitalized.

Translocation, introduction, reintroduction, and assisted migrations are species conservation strategies that are attracting increasing attention, especially in the face of climate change. However, preventing the extinction of the suite of dependent species whose host species are threatened is seldom considered, and the effects on dependent species of moving threatened hosts are unclear. There is no published guidance on how to decide whether to move species, given this uncertainty.

Elderly recipients of hepatitis C positive renal allografts can quickly develop liver disease.

Our institution explored using allografts from donors with Hepatitis C virus (HCV) for elderly renal transplantation (RT). Thirteen HCV- elderly recipients were transplanted with HCV+ allografts (eD+/R-) between January 2003 and April 2009. Ninety HCV- elderly recipients of HCV- allografts (eD-/R-), eight HCV+ recipients of HCV+ allografts (D+/R+) and thirteen HCV+ recipients of HCV- allografts (D-/R+) were also transplanted.

Operative management of temporomandibular joint ankylosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Purpose: Two common treatments of temporomandibular joint ankylosis are gap arthroplasty and ankylosis resection and reconstruction of the ramus-condyle unit with a costochondral graft. The purpose of the present study was to answer the following clinical question: "Among patients with temporomandibular joint ankylosis, do those patients who undergo gap arthroplasty, compared with those who undergo ankylosis resection and ramus-condyle unit reconstruction with a costochondral graft have better postoperative mandibular range of motion?"

Methods: A systematic search of the published data was performed to identify eligible studies. The primary predictor variable was treatment type (ie, gap arthroplasty or ankylosis resection and ramus-condyle unit reconstruction).
