Factors associated with perceived social isolation among veterans with spinal cord injury and disorders: Cross sectional survey.

Context/objective: Examine demographics, injury characteristics, objective measures of social isolation and health factors that are associated with perceived social isolation (PSI) among Veterans with spinal cord injury and disorders (SCI/D).

Design: Cross-sectional survey.

Setting: The Veterans Health Administrations (VHA) SCI/D system of care.

Variables Associated With Moderate to High Loneliness Among Individuals Living With Spinal Cord Injuries and Disorders.

Objective: To identify variables independently associated with moderate to high loneliness in individuals living with Spinal Cord Injuries or Disorders (SCI/D).

Design: A cross-sectional, national survey of a random sample of community-dwelling Veterans with SCI/D in the United States. Survey methodology was used to collect data on demographic and injury characteristics, general health, chronic and SCI-secondary conditions, and loneliness.

Facilitators to alleviate loneliness and social isolation as identified by individuals with spinal cord injuries and disorders: A qualitative study.

Purpose/objective: Individuals with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D) are at increased risk for experiencing loneliness and social isolation. The aim is to describe facilitators identified by individuals living with SCI/D to alleviate loneliness and perceived social isolation.

Research Method/design: Descriptive qualitative design using in-depth interviews with veterans with SCI/D ( = 23).

Preventing Community-Acquired Pressure Injuries in Spinal Cord Injury: Online Healthcare Provider Curriculum.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop and pilot an educational curriculum for healthcare providers to better understand community-acquired pressure injury (CAPrI) prevention in veterans living with spinal cord injury (SCI).

Methods: The Thomas six-step process model guided curricular development and evaluation. Curriculum development followed six steps: (1) problem identification and general needs assessment from a literature review and qualitative research triangulating provider and veteran perspectives of CAPrI prevention in SCI, (2) target needs assessment using a focus group with 14 experienced practicing interprofessional SCI providers, (3) creation of module goals and objectives with content review from experts ( n = 8), (4) development of curriculum content and educational strategies, (5) implementation of a pilot ( n = 4), and (6) evaluation of satisfaction and curriculum content via survey and focus group.

Randomised controlled trial of the Caring Connections intervention to reduce loneliness and perceived social isolation in persons with spinal cord injuries and disorders: study protocol.

Introduction: Perceived social isolation and loneliness are understudied in individuals with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D). The few existing studies reported that they are common, yet poorly treated, in persons with SCI/D. We developed an intervention called Caring Connections (CC) aimed at reducing loneliness and perceived social isolation in persons with SCI/D.
