  • Fibroma ossificans are generally well-defined but not often encapsulated tumors, presenting challenges for treatment choices in maxillofacial surgery.
  • A case involving a 17-year-old woman with a 6-year-old mandibular swelling revealed a benign tumor, confirmed by imaging and histological examination, leading to successful surgical resection and reconstruction.
  • The report highlights the importance of considering clinical and radiological features in managing ossifying fibroids, as treatment can be invasive.

Background: In Guinea, despite women's recourse to antenatal care (ANC), little remains known about the use of focused antenatal care (FANC), contained in the ANC package.

Aim: The aim of this study was to analyse the frequency and factors associated with FANC, using data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) 2018.

Setting: This study was conducted in Guinea.

Mitochondria are essential eukaryotic organelles that regulate a range of cellular processes, from metabolism to calcium homeostasis and programmed cell death. They serve as essential platforms for antiviral signaling proteins during the innate immune response to viral infections. Mitochondria are dynamic structures, undergoing frequent fusion and fission processes that regulate various aspects of mitochondrial biology, including innate immunity.

  • Virus-like particles (VLPs) are promising vaccine platforms because they resemble virus structures, and this study focuses on using SARS-CoV-2 VLPs to determine which spike variant triggers the best immune response in a mouse model.
  • A combination intranasal and intramuscular vaccination with VLPs led to significant immune responses, particularly through antibodies, with the Beta variant spikes proving most effective in protecting against various SARS-CoV-2 variants.
  • The findings highlight that the Beta spike protein could be key in developing a more robust vaccine against emerging COVID-19 variants by enhancing overall immunity.

Background: The Republic of Guinea, where malaria represents the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children, the seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) is deployed only in areas with very seasonal modes of transmission. It should target children at the highest risk of serious illness. The objective of the study was to prevent uncomplicated and serious cases of malaria in the target population.

This study aimed to analyze factors associated with obstetric fistula care-seeking behavior in Guinea, based on data from the 2018 Demographic and Health Survey. Women aged 15-49 years who reported having obstetric fistula constituted the study population, statistical analysis was using Stata 16.0 software.

  • * Key factors linked to unassisted deliveries included a lack of antenatal care (ANC), perceived distance to health facilities, and socio-economic status, particularly in poorer households.
  • * Recommendations to reduce unassisted deliveries include improving community awareness, providing functional ambulances for rural health centers, and ensuring adequate prenatal care supplies in health facilities.

Article Synopsis
  • The Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV) poses a rising public health risk in the US, with complicated research due to its classification as a BSL3 pathogen and Federal Select Agent.
  • A study explored effective methods to inactivate EEEV by using heat, chemicals, and UV radiation on infected cells and supernatants of a related virus, the Madariaga virus (MADV).
  • The identified inactivation techniques could enhance research opportunities and experimental diversity for scientists studying EEEV by ensuring safety in the lab.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of computed tomography (CT) and its degree of concordance with pathological examination in the etiological diagnosis of maxillomandibulartumours.

Materials And Methods: Our study was cross-sectional, retrospective and prospective. It took place over a period of five years and six months and included cases of maxilla-mandibulartumours confirmed by pathological examination after clinical examination and CT scan.

Antibiotic resistance is a major public health threat of the twenty-first century and represents an important risk to the global economy. Healthcare-associated infections mainly caused by drug-resistant bacteria are wreaking havoc in patient care worldwide. The spread of such pathogens limits the utility of available drugs and complicates the treatment of bacterial diseases.

Background: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a leading cause of hospital-associated antibiotic-related diarrhea and deaths worldwide. Vancomycin is one of the few antibiotics recommended for both nonsevere and severe CDI cases. We sought to determine whether vancomycin nonsusceptible C.

Introduction: Diabetes is a chronic hyperglycemia which can be discovered with specific organic complications particularly affecting the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and vessels. Globally, the prevalence of stroke in people with diabetes is approximately 10%.

Objective: Study the epidemiological and clinical aspects of stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Vector-borne pathogens cause many human infectious diseases and are responsible for high mortality and morbidity throughout the world. They can also cause livestock epidemics with dramatic social and economic consequences. Due to its high costs, vector-borne disease surveillance is often limited to current threats, and the investigation of emerging pathogens typically occurs after the reports of clinical cases.

Malaria incidence is generally lower in cities than rural areas. However, reported urban malaria incidence may not accurately reflect the level of ongoing transmission, which has potentially large implications for prevention efforts. To guide mosquito net distribution, we assessed the extent of malaria transmission in Conakry, Guinea, in 2018.

Background: The commensal microbiota of mosquitoes impacts their development, immunity, and competency, and could provide a target for alternative entomological control approaches. However, despite the importance of the mosquito/microbiota interactions, little is known about the relative contribution of endogenous and exogenous factors in shaping the bacterial communities of mosquitoes.

Methods: We used a high-throughput sequencing-based assay to characterize the bacterial composition and diversity of 665 individual field-caught mosquitoes, as well as their species, genotype at an insecticide resistance locus, blood-meal composition, and the eukaryotic parasites and viruses they carry.

Bacteria play an important role in soil ecosystems and their activities are crucial in nutrient composition and recycling. Pesticides are extensively used in agriculture to control pests and improve yield. However, increased use of pesticides on agricultural lands results in soil contamination, which could have adverse effect on its bacterial communities.

  • - Trichiasis, where eyelashes touch the eye, can lead to blindness, making accurate prevalence data across affected regions essential for resource distribution.
  • - A study collected district-level data from 44 countries, refining estimates using the most reliable sources, standardizing for age and sex, and incorporating expert assessments when data was scarce.
  • - The 2016 global trichiasis estimate was 2.8 million cases, lower than earlier figures due to improved data quality, enhanced management services, and declines in active trachoma incidence.

To confirm and investigate possible explanations for unusual trends in malaria indicators, a protocol for rapid, focal assessment of malaria transmission and control interventions was piloted in N'Zérékoré and Macenta Prefectures, which each reported surprisingly low incidence of malaria during the peak transmission months during 2017 in holoendemic Forested Guinea. In each prefecture, epidemiological and entomological cross-sectional surveys were conducted in two sub-prefectures reporting high incidence and one sub-prefecture reporting low incidence. Investigators visited six health facilities and 356 households, tested 476 children, performed 14 larval breeding site transects, and conducted 12 nights of human landing catches during the 2-week investigation.
