The rapid growth of marine industries has emphasized the focus on environmental impacts for all industries, as well as the influence of key environmental parameters on, for instance, offshore wind or aquaculture performance, animal welfare and structural integrity of different constructions. Development of automatized sensors together with efficient communication and information systems will enhance surveillance and monitoring of environmental processes and impact. We have developed a modular Smart Ocean observatory, in this case connected to a large-scale marine aquaculture research facility.

Background: Surveys conducted in different regions of the world show that the prevalence rates of health risk behaviors (HRBs) in university students are sometimes higher than those found in non-university populations. This study aims to identify the prevalence rates and demographic and academic environment correlates associated with HRBs among Brazilian university students.

Methods: In a cross-sectional epidemiological study, a random sample of 5310 university students answered an online questionnaire, with demographic (sex, age, skin color, marital status, and paid work) and academic setting information (housing type, size of campus, year, and shift of study), as well as items clustered in four HRB domains: personal safety and violence, sexual behavior and contraception, addictive substance use, eating habits, physical activity, and sleep.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe a simple test to predict in vitro efficacy of aztreonam/avibactam (ATM-AVI) combination based on a pre-diffusion assay involving routinely available ceftazidime/avibactam (CAZ-AVI) and aztreonam (ATM) disks.

Polymyxins are still used mainly in treating infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae worldwide. The most frequent mechanism of acquired resistance to polymyxins in Gram-negative bacilli is the occurrence of mutations in chromosomal genes regulating operons responsible for lipopolysaccharide modification. We report for the first time the efficient use of accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) for extraction of ricin to analytical purposes, followed by the combined use of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and MALDI-TOF MS/MS method. That has provided a fast and unambiguous method of ricin identification for in real cases of forensic investigation of suspected samples. Additionally, MALDI-TOF MS was applied to characterize the presence and the toxic activity of ricin in irradiated samples.

Purpose: To observe the main ocular manifestations of patients with rosacea and to evaluate the cost-benefit of supplementary diagnostic examinations.

Methods: Twenty patients with acne rosacea from the Dermatology Service of the São Paulo Federal University (UNIFESP) were interviewed through a questionnaire, submitted to ophthalmologic examination and tested with Schirmer I, fluorescein and rose Bengal staining, impression cytology and conjunctival scrub. The costs of these examinations were abstracted from the Public Health System's values (SUS), Brazilian Medical Association values (AMB) and values charged by a private service.
