The heat capacity of [Hdamel]2[Cu(II)(tdpd)2] x 2 THF was measured from 6 to 250 K by adiabatic calorimetry. There are four heat anomalies around 150 K associated with disordering in the orientation of the uncoordinated THF molecules and in the conformation of the out-of-plane allyl groups of [Hdamel](+) units. The total entropy of transition was determined to be 19.

Reversible vapochromic behavior of a porous copper(II) coordination polymer {[Cu(bhnq)(THF)2](THF)}n (1; THF = tetrahydrofuran) constructed from a flexible hingelike ligand H2bhnq [2,2'-bis(3-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone)] has been investigated by adsorption measurements. The isotherms show large hysteretic and stepwise profiles, suggesting the occurrence of the guest-induced framework transformation. The dynamic coil-like behavior of 1 can be controlled through the change of the hydrogen-bonding interactions caused by the reversible and selective incorporation of guest molecules.

The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility, X-ray crystallography, and Mössbauer and Raman spectra of a new dinuclear complex-based one-dimensional coordination polymer [[Fe(II)2(NCS)2(mu-bpypz)2](micro-4,4'-bpy)].MeOH demonstrated a steep one-step [HS-HS] to [LS-LS] spin transition.

Novel triply hydrogen bonded suprastructures based on [M(tdpd)2(L)2]2- (H2tdpd=1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-5,6-dioxo-2,3-pyrazinedicarbonitrile, L=solvent) and melamine-analogous cations have been synthesized and characterized. The use of anions containing two AAA sets from [M(tdpd)2(L)2]2- together with cations containing one DDD set (A=hydrogen-bond acceptor, D=hydrogen-bond donor) leads to the formation of complementary triply hydrogen bonded modules in the solid state. In all cases, the building module is further extended via additional hydrogen-bonding interactions to produce a tape, and tapes are assembled into sheets.

Novel metal-complex assemblies constructed from the flexible hinge-like ligand H(2)bhnq (H(2)bhnq=2,2'-bi(3-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone)) have been synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of these compounds reveal that four types of architectures are accessible by variation of the metal ions. In copper(II) compounds 1-3, the chelating bhnq(2-) ions bridge copper(II) centers to form one-dimensional zigzag chains.

Exposure to long-term hypoxia (LTH) results in altered cortisol responses in the ovine fetus. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that LTH alters adrenal responsiveness to fetal hypotension. Pregnant ewes were maintained at high altitude (3,820 meters) from day 30 of gestation.

Two new copper(II) compounds of chloranilate and 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine have been synthesized, and the structures have been solved by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. The crystal structure of [[Cu(2)(CA)(terpy)(2)][Cu(CA)(2)]](n)(1), where H(2)CA = chloranilic acid and terpy = 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine, consists of two modules, the dimer unit [Cu(2)(CA)(terpy)(2)](2+) and the anionic mononuclear unit [Cu(CA)(2)](2)(-), forming an alternated chain. The chain is stabilized by semicoordinating and additional but efficient secondary bonding interactions.

Novel intercalation compounds constructed from the common two-dimensional hydrogen-bond-supported layers and functional guests [(H(0.5)phz)(2)[Fe(CA)(2)(H(2)O)(2)].2H(2)O](n)(1), ([Fe(Cp)(2)][Fe(CA)(2)(H(2)O)(2)])(n)(2), ([Fe(Cp*)(2)][Fe(CA)(2)(H(2)O)(2)])(n)(3), and [(TTF)(2)[Fe(CA)(2)(H(2)O)(2)]](n)(4) (H(2)CA = chloranilic acid, phz = phenazine, [Fe(Cp)(2)] = ferrocene, [Fe(Cp*)(2)] = decamethylferrocene, TTF = tetrathiafulvalene) are described.
