A preliminary global investigation into potential impacts on successful captive breeding for two species of Rhyticeros hornbill.

Asian hornbills have limited ex situ breeding success, yet these species are some of the most threatened of birds, in need of managed breeding programs. To optimize breeding and increase the sustainability of such populations, it is necessary to assess and improve their husbandry and welfare. Evidence to improve reproduction can be gathered through global husbandry surveys.

Isotopic reconstruction of short to absent breastfeeding in a 19th century rural Dutch community.

Artificial feeding of young infants is considered a modern phenomenon. However, historical sources note its practice in some past European populations. This research explores factors that contributed to a short to absent period of breastfeeding in pre-modern Netherlands.

Conductive-bridge memory cells based on a nanoporous electrodeposited GeSbTe alloy.

We report on the fabrication of memory devices based on a nanoporous GeSbTe layer electrodeposited inbetween TiN and Ag electrodes. It is shown that devices can operate along two distinct electrical modes consisting of a volatile or a non-volatile resistance switching mode upon appropriate preconditioning procedures. Based on electrical measurements conducted in both switching modes and physical analysis performed on a device after electrical stress, resistance switching is attributed to the formation/dissolution of a conductive filament from the Ag electrode into the GST layer whereas the volatile/non-volatile resistance switching is attributed to the presence of an interface layer between the GST and the Ag top electrode.

Bingo! Holy play in experience-oriented society.

What place is there for holy play in experience-oriented society? Is it possible and useful to make analytic distinctions between the liturgical quality of events? I explored these questions by doing research on the boundaries between the religious field and the field of leisure. Fifty site visits to public events in the Netherlands (2006-2014) resulted in a collection of ethnographic data. I used the concept of play as introduced by the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga and the tools of ritual studies to explore whether these could help to produce an account of the liturgical quality of ritualized meetings.
