The collapsed athlete encompasses multiple critical and noncritical pathologic conditions, management of which highly depends on the elements of presentation of an athlete, the environment in which the athlete presents, and the key history elements leading to the collapse. Early identification of an unresponsive/pulseless athlete with basic life support/CPR, AED use, and EMS activation is key, with the addition of early hemorrhage control in acute traumatic injuries. The initiation of a focused history and physical examination is critical to rule out life-threatening causes of collapse and to guide initial management and disposition.

Introduction: Recent evidence has shown that oral antibiotic therapy is not inferior to IV antibiotic therapy in the treatment of complicated Staphylococcus aureus infections. Therefore, oral antibiotic therapy is now frequently prescribed in clinical practice due to cost benefit, ease of administration, decreased complication rate, and lack of need for IV access. In vitro susceptibility testing for β-lactam oral antibiotics is not routinely performed as the guidelines provided by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) recommend using oxacillin and cefoxitin as surrogate markers.

Background And Purpose: Transgenic mouse models of tauopathy display prominent sleep/wake disturbances which manifest primarily as a hyperarousal phenotype during the active phase, suggesting that tau pathology contributes to sleep/wake changes. However, no study has yet investigated the effect of sleep-promoting compounds in these models. Such information has implications for the use of hypnotics as potential therapeutic tools in tauopathy-related disorders.

This report describes the phenotypic characteristics of a novel fungal species, isolated from a prosthetic hip infection. The patient, who had undergone multiple total hip arthroplasties due to Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, presented with continued fever and wound dehiscence. Findings upon incision and draining were notable for necrotic tissue and a sinus tract from the fluid collection.
