Metastatic renal cell carcinoma to the bladder: a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study.

Although rare, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) can metastasize to the bladder. When this occurs, it might complicate diagnosis. Morphologically, RCC can be confused with transitional cell carcinomas (TCCs), especially those exhibiting clear cell features, and also with other bladder tumors, such as paragangliomas and metastatic melanomas.

Perception of emotion and neurocognitive functioning in schizophrenia: what's the link?

In schizophrenia, relatively little is known about the association between deficits in emotion perception and basic neurocognitive functioning. The present study examined perception of emotion and a discrete set of neurocognitive functions in 28 treatment-resistant schizophrenic patients. Measures of emotion perception included a facial emotion identification test (still photographs presented on videotape), a voice emotion identification test (audiotape), and an affect perception test (brief interpersonal vignettes presented on videotape).

Giant hidradenocarcinoma: a report of malignant transformation from nodular hidradenoma.

A giant hidradenocarcinoma presented by a 75-year-old female is reported. The patient had a malignant transformation within a nodular hidradenoma involving the right postauricular area, which was treated by mass removal and a right radical neck dissection with a free-flap covering. Malignant hidradenocarcinoma is the least common adnexal tumor of uncertain origin.

Risperidone versus haloperidol for perception of emotion in treatment-resistant schizophrenia: preliminary findings.

Currently, little is known about the pharmacological effects of the new generation of antipsychotic medications on perception of emotion in schizophrenia. The present study was designed to compare the effects of risperidone versus haloperidol on the ability to perceive emotion in 20 treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients, using a double-blind design. beta-chemokines play an important role in the development of immunologic reactions. Macrophages are major beta-chemokine-producing cells during T-cell directed, delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions in tissues, and have been reported to be important producers of beta-chemokines in the lymph nodes of HIV-1-infected individuals. However, the physiological signals responsible for inducing macrophages to produce beta-chemokines have not been established.

Malignant mixed Müllerian tumor (homologous type) of the adnexa with neuroendocrine differentiation: a case report.

Malignant mixed müllerian tumors (MMMT) are unusual neoplasms occurring mostly in the uterus. In the ovary, they are very rare and represent fewer than 1% of all ovarian malignancies; in the salpinx, they are even rarer than those of the ovary. We report a carcinosarcoma of the left adnexa having features of neuroendocrine differentiation in a 69-year-old female.

A Tetrahymena thermophila G4-DNA binding protein with dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase activity.

G4-DNA is a four-stranded structure that is formed by guanine-rich sequences. We report here the purification and characterization of a novel G4-DNA binding protein from Tetrahymena thermophila, designated TGP2. TGP2 was found to preferentially bind to G4-DNA oligonucleotides with adjacent single-stranded domains containing phosphorylated 5' ends and the sequence element, 5'-ACTG-3'.

Procedural learning in schizophrenia: evidence from serial reaction time.

Although schizophrenic patients, as a group, show deficits on measures of explicit learning, it is unclear whether they also have deficits on measures of implicit learning. The current study assessed procedural learning in a sample of 48 chronic schizophrenic inpatients and 23 normal controls using the serial reaction time test (SRT). In addition, we examined the clinical correlates of procedural learning.

Spermatic cord contamination in testicular cancer.

It is not uncommon to find testicular germ-cell tumors in the spermatic cord. This may represent contamination or true involvement (vascular invasion or direct tumoral extension into the cord). A correct identification of the process has important clinical implications.

Somatostatin inhibits the secretion of bombesin-like peptides from small cell lung cancer cells.

The effects of somatostatin (SRIF) on small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cell line NCI-H345 was investigated. SRIF had no effects on the basal cAMP levels or the secretion rate of bombesin-like peptides. VIP (1 microM) increased the cAMP levels approximately 10-fold and the secretion rate of bombesin-like peptides 3-fold.

Genetic influence on the antibody response to antigens of Schistosoma mansoni in chronically infected mice.

Immunoprecipitations of in vitro translation products of mRNA from adult Schistosoma mansoni worms with sera from chronically infected mice of 12 inbred strains reveal a strain-dependent heterogeneity in the antibody responses to schistosome antigens. Of the strains tested the response to the 86K antigen was restricted to mice of haplotypes H-2d H-2k, and H-2a while the 14K antigen was only recognized by H-2k mice. Responses to other antigens revealed the influence of non-H-2 genes on the antibody response although no clear correlation was apparent between the antigens recognized and the non-H-2 genes of the strains.
