Six different biosample collection cards, often collectively referred to as FTA (Flinders Technology Associates) cards, were compared for their ability to inactivate viruses and stabilize viral nucleic acid for molecular testing. The cards were tested with bluetongue virus, foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), small ruminant morbillivirus (peste des petits ruminants virus), and lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), encompassing non-enveloped and enveloped representatives of viruses with double-stranded and single-stranded RNA genomes, as well as an enveloped DNA virus. The cards were loaded with virus-containing cell culture supernatant and tested after one day, one week, and one month.

Various treatments and buffers are used to inactivate pathogens in diagnostic samples. At the same time, adequate sample preservation, particularly of nucleic acids, is essential to allow an accurate laboratory diagnosis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA proficiency test was performed to verify that the regional veterinary laboratories in Germany can provide reliable foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) diagnostics. Overall, 24 samples were to be analyzed for FMDV-specific nucleic acids by real-time RT-PCR, and 16 samples had to be tested by ELISA for antibodies against non-structural proteins of FMDV. For both methods, a range of dilutions of the original materials (inactivated FMDV vaccine or convalescent serum from infected animals, respectively) was prepared, and negative samples were included as well.

However, in 'FMD-free' countries the transport and downstream processing of such samples from potentially infected animals present a biosafety risk, particularly during heightened surveillance, potentially involving decentralised testing in laboratories without adequate biocontainment facilities. In such circumstances, rapid inactivation of virus, if present, prior to transport becomes a necessity, while still maintaining the integrity of diagnostic analytes.

Methods: We investigated the suitability of IDX solution as a carrier of Cisplatin and Doxorubicin for delivery as pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC). We examined the sprayability of IDX, the aerosol characteristics, the stability of the molecule after aerosolization, the effects of IDX on the adhesion of MKN45 human gastric cancer cells, the synergistic effect of aerosolized IDX with Cisplatin and Doxorubicin, and the chemical stability of IDX, Cisplatin, and Doxorubicin in combination.
With the large volume of genomic data being analysed nowadays it becomes extremely important to provide automated ways of protein classification to give the scientist a good overview of the analysed data. The system described here is very flexible and can be used with any given protein classification scheme. Before using the system, it has to be trained with a set of already classified proteins.

We report on 48 patients, treated by laparoscopic fundoplication for pronounced gastroesophageal reflux disease. The results show that laparoscopic fundoplication is a very safe, gentle, and successful procedure for the therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease. We regard laparoscopic fundoplication as a good alternative to long term medical therapy if a careful diagnosis and indication is provided.

The experience with standard Kausch-Whipple procedure is reviewed and compared with partial duodenopancreatectomies extended by partial resection of the portal vein. Perioperative morbidity has decreased to below 5% and survival rates with and without vessel resection are not significantly different. Therefore, infiltration of mesentericoportal vessels is not a contraindication for Kausch-Whipple procedure.

Various in vitro studies have identified the low initial pH in combination with high lactate content, as well as the hyperosmolality and high glucose concentration present in currently used solutions as the primary determinants of their bioincompatibility. Bicarbonate buffered PDF (at neutral pH) display improved in vitro biocompatibility as compared to conventional, lactate buffered PDF.

To investigate the immunosuppressive efficacy of BT563, a placebo-controlled trial was performed and BT563 was added to the standard triple induction after liver transplantation. Forty consecutive recipients of primary orthotopic liver transplants (OLT) (median age 47 yr [range 18-65]) were randomized.

In the present study, we attempted to investigate whether the ECM may be also involved in the pathophysiological sequelae of acute and chronic rejection. Of 81 patients monitored for the ECM parameters laminin, hyaluronic acid, fibronectin receptor, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta, 28 patients developed acute rejection (< 1 month), in 14 patients (17.

After hilar and partial hepatic resections for hilar cholangiocarcinoma, loco-regional tumor recurrence appears as the primary site of failure.
