The influence of the vehicle on the dermal penetration efficacy of three different active ingredient (AI) surrogates (hydrophilic, amphiphilic, lipophilic model drugs), that were incorporated into these vehicles, was investigated with the ex vivo porcine ear model, which allowed to assess time and space resolved dermal penetration profiles of the AI. Fifteen different vehicles, including classical vehicles (hydrogel, oleogel, o/w cream, w/o ointment, amphiphilic cream) and innovative vehicles were included into the study. Results show tremendous differences in the penetration efficacy of the AI among the different vehicles.

Microfluidic artificial lungs (μALs) are a new class of membrane oxygenators. Compared to traditional hollow-fiber oxygenators, μALs closely mimic the alveolar microenvironment due to their size-scale and promise improved gas exchange efficiency, hemocompatibility, biomimetic blood flow networks, and physiologically relevant blood vessel pressures and shear stresses. When faced with a binary or count outcome, informative hypotheses can be tested in the generalized linear model using the distance statistic as well as modified versions of the Wald, the Score and the likelihood-ratio test (LRT).
