Personalized Nutrition (PN) aims to provide tailored dietary recommendations to improve a person's health outcomes by integrating a multitude of individual-level information and support desired behavior changes. The field is rapidly evolving with technological advances. As new biomarkers are discovered, wearables and other devices can now provide up-to-the-minute insights, and artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models support recommendations and lifestyle behavior change.

Background: Patient engagement (PE) in clinical trials has gained importance yet remains uncommon, particularly in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a critical precursor to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cannabidiol (CBD) shows potential in slowing MCI progression due to its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. In CBD research, PE is underutilized too.

Arthroscopic repair of anteroinferior glenoid rim fractures: mean 10-year clinical and radiologic results.

Background: To date, long-term results of the arthroscopic repair of glenoid rim fractures are missing. The aim of this study was, to evaluate clinical and radiographic results following arthroscopic repair of anteroinferior glenoid fractures using anchors or bioabsorbable compression screws after a mean follow-up period of 10 years.

Methods: Clinical outcome measures included evaluation of recurrent instability, the Constant Score, Subjective Shoulder Value, Rowe Score (RS), Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Score, and Melbourne Instability Shoulder Score.

Flow Cytometry Analysis of Microglial Phenotypes in the Murine Brain During Aging and Disease.

Microglia, the brain's primary resident immune cell, exists in various phenotypic states depending on intrinsic and extrinsic signaling. Distinguishing between these phenotypes can offer valuable biological insights into neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative processes. Recent advances in single-cell transcriptomic profiling have allowed for increased granularity and better separation of distinct microglial states.

Phenology of five tick species in the central Great Plains.

The states of Kansas and Oklahoma, in the central Great Plains, lie at the western periphery of the geographic distributions of several tick species. As the focus of most research on ticks and tick-borne diseases has been on Lyme disease which commonly occurs in areas to the north and east, the ticks of this region have seen little research attention. Here, we report on the phenology and activity patterns shown by tick species observed at 10 sites across the two states and explore factors associated with abundance of all and life specific individuals of the dominant species.

Objective: In Germany, people in need of care can be supported by benefits from care insurance. Prerequisite is an official assessment of the need for care, which is carried out by assigning care levels (1 to 5) according to the Second Care Strengthening Act. One of the reasons for introducing care levels was to pay more attention to the needs of people with dementia.

How Can We Compare Cochlear Implant Systems across Manufacturers? A Scoping Review of Recent Literature.

Electric stimulation via a cochlear implant (CI) enables people with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss to regain speech understanding and music appreciation and, thus, allow them to actively engage in social life. Three main manufacturers (Cochlear, MED-EL, and Advanced Bionics "AB") have been offering CI systems, thus challenging CI recipients and otolaryngologists with a difficult decision as currently no comprehensive overview or meta-analysis on performance outcomes following CI implantation is available. The main goals of this scoping review were to (1) map the literature on speech and music performance outcomes and to (2) find whether studies have performed outcome comparisons between devices of different manufacturers.

Prospective evaluation of nontuberculous mycobacteria disease in cystic fibrosis: The design of the PREDICT study.

Background: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are an important cause of airway infections in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF). Isolation of NTM from respiratory specimens of pwCF do not mandate treatment in the absence of clinical and radiologic features of NTM pulmonary disease (NTM-PD), as some pwCF clear the infection without treatment and others do not appear to progress to NTM-PD despite persistent infection. An evidence-based protocol to standardize diagnosis of NTM-PD is needed to systematically identify pwCF who may benefit from treatment.

Federated machine learning for a facilitated implementation of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare - a proof of concept study for the prediction of coronary artery calcification scores.

The implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) still faces significant hurdles and one key factor is the access to data. One approach that could support that is federated machine learning (FL) since it allows for privacy preserving data access. For this proof of concept, a prediction model for coronary artery calcification scores (CACS) has been applied.

Toward a cochlear implant electrode array with shape memory effect for post-insertion perimodiolar positioning.

For cochlear implants (CI) a final position of the electrode array (EA) along the inner wall of the spirally shaped cochlea is considered to be beneficial because it results in a closer proximity to the auditory nerve fibers. A shape memory effect (SME) could facilitate such shift of the EA toward the cochlear inner wall, but its implementation remains to be solved. The current study presents an EA prototype featuring the SME with minute adjustments of the material properties of Nitinol, a shape memory alloy, in combination with a suitable cooling strategy to prevent premature curling.

Purpose: The use of epinephrine (EN) or vasopressin (VP) in hemorrhagic shock is well established. Due to its specific neurovascular effects, VP might be superior in concern to brain tissue integrity. The aim of this study was to evaluate cerebral effects of either EN or VP resuscitation after hemorrhagic shock.

Size does matter - Determination of the critical molecular size for the uptake of chemicals across the chorion of zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos.

In order to identify the upper limits of the molecular size of chemicals to cross the chorion of zebrafish, Danio rerio, differently sized, non-toxic and chemically inert polyethylene glycols (PEGs; 2000-12,000Da) were applied at concentrations (9.76mM) high enough to provoke osmotic pressure. Whereas small PEGs were expected to be able to cross the chorion, restricted uptake of large PEGs was hypothesized to result in shrinkage of the chorion.

Microdialysis as a Part of Invasive Cerebral Monitoring During Porcine Septic Shock.

Background: Metabolic changes in critically ill patients with endotoxin-induced septic shock are measured primarily by techniques that afford organ-specific metabolic monitoring based on interstitial fluid samples. The present study was designed to evaluate the role of cerebral microdialysis (MD) as a part of invasive neuromonitoring during endotoxemia in a porcine model.

Materials And Methods: Continuous endotoxin infusion was administered to 7 female pigs and, in addition to hemodynamic monitoring and blood chemistry, interstitial lactate, pyruvate, glucose and glycerol concentrations in muscle, liver, and cerebral tissue were measured via in vivo MD for an observation period of 180 minutes.

Cerebral metabolism during experimental endotoxin shock and after preconditioning with monophosphoryl lipid A.

Purpose: Preconditioning with low doses of monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL) has been shown to induce endotoxin tolerance and to reduce the metabolic and hemodynamic consequences of endotoxin shock. However, no data are available about the effects of endotoxin preconditioning on cerebral metabolism during endotoxemia. The study was designed to determine the effects of endotoxin preconditioning with MPL on cerebral metabolism via microdialysis compared to muscle tissue metabolism during experimental endotoxemia.

Single-site community consultation for emergency research in a community hospital setting.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate community member feedback from community consultation and public disclosure activities performed for a clinical investigation involving a device designed to treat traumatic brain injury in prehospital contexts. The clinical investigation of that device was to be performed under the federal regulations providing an exception from prospective informed consent requirements in emergency settings. Secondarily, we sought to assess the community consultation process by measuring the levels of outreach provided by the different communication methods used in these activities, with special attention to the effectiveness of social media for community outreach.

Motivational interviewing for older adults in primary care: a systematic review.

Chronic disease is now the leading cause of death and disability in United States. Many chronic illnesses experienced by older adults can be prevented or managed through behavior change, making patient counseling an essential component of disease prevention and management. Motivational Interviewing (MI), a type of conversational method, has been effective in eliciting health behavior changes in people in a variety of settings and may also be a useful tool to help older adults change.
