In the UK, infections due to Panton-Valentine leucocidin-positive community-associated meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (PVL-MRSA) have been reported sporadically. In September 2006, a fatal PVL-MRSA infection occurred in a Filipino healthcare worker (HCW) after she underwent caesarean section. Throat and nasal swabs were obtained from contacts of cases in community and hospital.

Design: Prospective surveillance study.
Setting: Children aged <16 years hospitalised with bacteraemia due to MRSA.
Background: There is little robust evidence to test the policy assumption that housing-led area regeneration strategies will contribute to health improvement and reduce social inequalities in health. The GoWell Programme has been designed to measure effects on health and wellbeing of multi-faceted regeneration interventions on residents of disadvantaged neighbourhoods in the city of Glasgow, Scotland.
Methods/design: This mixed methods study focused (initially) on 14 disadvantaged neighbourhoods experiencing regeneration.
Novel eccentric (lengthening contraction) exercise typically results in muscle damage, which manifests as prolonged muscle dysfunction, delayed onset muscle soreness, and leakage of muscle proteins into circulation. There is a large degree of variability in the damage response of individuals to eccentric exercise, with higher responders at risk for potentially fatal rhabdomyolysis. We hypothesized that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) and its receptor chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) associate with the high degrees of variability in the muscle damage response.

Denosumab suppresses remodeling more than alendronate, leading to greater gains in areal bone mineral density (aBMD). These greater gains may reflect differing effects of each drug on bone microarchitecture and strength.

Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) that are multi-locus sequence type clonal complex 22 (CC22) comprise a significant public health problem in the UK. In the present study we sought to determine the genetic diversity, and the respective patient demographics, among 47 PVL-MRSA with a CC22 pulsotype that occurred sporadically or in clusters in community and healthcare settings in eight of nine geographic regions in England and Wales between January 2005 and September 2007. Patient demographics and disease presentations were typical for PVL-S.

Methods: Two paediatric males with cystic fibrosis had sputum samples quantitatively cultured during hospitalization. After the isolation of MRSA from both patients, oral treatment with 300 mg linezolid twice daily was initiated for periods of 1-2 months separated by up to 6 months.
Background: The prevalence of MRSA in patients with CF has risen in recent years. We adhere to a policy of segregation and barrier nursing to manage patients with MRSA, and we actively pursue eradication of MRSA. We have evaluated our experiences of MRSA infection in our large adult CF centre.

This paper presents the study background, the design and methods, and the findings at one year.
Methods: Data were collected from social tenants who were rehoused into a new, general-purpose socially-rented home developed and let by a Scottish Registered Social Landlord (the "Intervention" group).
Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is an increasing problem, predominantly in previously healthy individuals including notable risk groups such as the homeless, those who play close-contact sports, military personnel, men who have sex with men (MSM) and injecting drug users (IDUs). Over a 5-month period, four IDUs were admitted to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, UK, with MRSA bacteraemia. All four patients presented with complex clinical features, with more than one focus of infection, and were linked epidemiologically.

Recent scattered reports of the emergence of multiresistant PVL-MRSA have highlighted the potential for resistance to emerge. Here we detail polyclonal multiply antibiotic-resistant PVL-MRSA occurring in England.

Six PVL-encoding temperate phages have been described and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the PVL genes have been reported. In the present study, 22 PVL-positive CA-MRSA isolates were chosen to reflect the diversity of multilocus sequence type (MLST) clonal complexes (CC) identified in our hospital.

Within the framework of the Health Protection Agency's programme of enhanced surveillance of Staphylococcus aureus with Panton-Valentine Leucocidin (PVL-SA) in England and Wales conducted during 2005-2006, we identified 720 PVL-SA, representing a two-fold increase between 2005 (n = 224) and 2006 (n = 496). The number of PVL-methicillin-resistant S. aureus rose from 119 to 159 in that period.

Ten highly genetically related MRSA isolates and one methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) isolate were identified in England between 2005 and June 2008.

Whilst CA-MRSA has been reported in the UK, there is little information concerning its clinical impact. Here we report three epidemic lineages of CA-MRSA occurring in East Yorkshire and describe their epidemiology, microbiology and clinical impact.

We aimed to enhance our case ascertainment of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus encoding Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL-MRSA), determine the patient demographic, risk factor and disease associations, and define the clonal diversity amongst isolates referred to the UK Health Protection Agency's Staphylococcus Reference Unit. PVL-MRSA collected during 2005-6 from community-based and hospitalised patients located across England and Wales were identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Representative geographically and temporally unrelated isolates were characterised via toxin gene profiling, SCCmec, spa and agr typing, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determinations.

Diagnostic self-testing devices are being developed for many illnesses, chronic diseases and infections. These will be used in hospitals, at point-of-care facilities and at home. Designed to allow earlier detection of diseases, self-testing diagnostic devices may improve disease prevention, slow the progression of disease and facilitate better treatment outcomes.
