The study aimed to investigate the link between glutathione S-transferase gene polymorphisms and stomach cancer risk while considering factors like smoking and Helicobacter pylori infection.
A matched case-control study was conducted with 410 gastric cancer patients and 410 cancer-free individuals, analyzing specific gene polymorphisms using PCR techniques.
Results indicated that the null variants of GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes are significantly associated with a higher risk of developing gastric cancer, especially when combined, with smoking further influencing this relationship.
