Background And Aims: To understand the link between species diversity and phenotype developmental evolution is an important issue in evolutionary biology. Yarrows in the genus Achillea (Asteraceae) show a great diversity in leaf serrate or pinnate dissection patterns. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the development of leaf serration requires the activity of the transcription factor CUC2.

A novel and convenient approach to chlorophins and bacteriophins has been developed through a degradation of nickel(II) 2,3,12,13-tetrabromo-5,10,15,20-tetraarylporphyrins by the anion of E-benzaldoxime. The UV-vis spectra of these chlorophins and bacteriophins are similar to those of metalated chlorin and bacteriochlorin systems but with more intense and bathochromically shifted Q-bands.

o-Acetaminophenols (2) reacted with Vilsmeier reagent under Meth-Cohn conditions to yield 2-formylpyrido[2,1-b]benzoxazoles (5) unexpectedly besides the known compounds 2-(benzoxazol-2'-yl)-3-dimethylaminoacroleins (4). Refluxing 4 in acetic anhydride gave 4-formylpyrido[2,1-b]benzoxazoles (6), an isomer of 5. Both 5a and 6a were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography.

Fifteen new chloroalkyl piperazine and nitrogen mustard porphyrins have been synthesized by the direct condensation of chloroalkyl piperazine, nitrogen mustard benzaldehyde, and pyrrole. Each porphyrin bears 1-4 chloroalkyl piperazine or nitrogen mustard moieties, which have been used as drugs. The Lindsey method was modified to synthesize chloroalkyl piperazine and nitrogen mustard porphyrins.
