Properties of the plant- and manure-derived biochars and their sorption of dibutyl phthalate and phenanthrene.

The properties of plant residue-derived biochars (PLABs) and animal waste-derived biochars (ANIBs) obtained at low and high heating treatment temperatures (300 and 450°C) as well as their sorption of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and phenanthrene (PHE) were investigated in this study. The higher C content of PLABs could explain that CO₂-surface area (CO₂-SA) of PLABs was remarkably high relative to ANIBs. OC and aromatic C were two key factors influencing the CO₂-SA of the biochars.

Solution-grown 3D Cu2O networks for efficient solar water splitting.

We report a facile and large-scale solution fabrication of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanowires/nanorods and 3D porous Cu2O networks and their application as photocathodes for efficient solar water splitting. The growth mechanism and structural characterization of 3D porous Cu2O networks are studied in detail. The photocathodic performance of Cu2O electrodes prepared under different growth conditions is investigated in a pH-neutral medium.

Benign perivascular myoid cell tumor (myopericytoma) of the urinary tract: a report of 2 cases with an emphasis on differential diagnosis.

Myopericytoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm thought to comprise part of a spectrum of perivascular myoid cell neoplasms with myofibroma, angioleiomyoma, and glomus tumor. We describe 2 such neoplasms involving the urinary tract: 1 incidentally identified in the kidney of a 59-year-old woman and 1 in the urinary bladder of a 52-year-old woman who presented with urinary frequency and dysuria. Histologically, the bladder tumor was composed of numerous blood vessels surrounded by plump perivascular myoid cells, as in subcutaneous myopericytoma.

[D-Ala2, D-Leu5] encephalin (DADLE) reversibly inhibits cellular transcription in neurons without causing cell injury.

[d-Ala(2)-d-Leu(5)]-Enkephalin (DADLE) has shown promising results in protecting neurons from damages. However, the mechanism for this protection is still under investigation. The current study was carried out to test the hypothesis that DADLE may regulate cellular transcription in neurons.

Accurate and economical detection of ALK positive lung adenocarcinoma with semiquantitative immunohistochemical screening.

Right detection of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene rearrangement is pivotal to selection of patients with lung adenocarcinoma for ALK-targeted therapy. We explored the potential of combination of immunohistochemistry (IHC) screening and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) as an affordable practice. We analyzed 410 unselected lung adenocarcinomas by ALK IHC (D5F3 clone) and FISH.

PBDEs, hydroxylated PBDEs and methoxylated PBDEs in bivalves from Beijing markets.

The structural analogues of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hydroxylated PBDEs (OH-PBDEs) and methoxylated PBDEs (MeO-PBDEs) have been attracting increasing concern in recent years. Five bivalve species (blue mussel, short-necked clam, surf clam, ark shell and razor clam) were collected from Beijing markets, and the concentrations of seven PBDEs, four OH-PBDEs and fourteen MeO-PBDEs in the bivalves were measured. The seasonal variations of these three types of polybrominated compound in blue mussels were also monitored.

Catalyzed oxidation for nanowire growth.

A simple, low-cost and scalable route to substrate-supported nanowire growth is reported based on catalyzed oxidation. Si photoanode protected by a metal modified ITO layer with ultrathin NiO(x) for solar water oxidation.

We report an ultrathin NiOx catalyzed Si np(+) junction photoanode for a stable and efficient solar driven oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water. A stable semi-transparent ITO/Au/ITO hole conducting oxide layer, sandwiched between the OER catalyst and the Si photoanode, is used to protect the Si from corrosion in an alkaline working environment, enhance the hole transportation, and provide a pre-activation contact to the NiOx catalyst. The NiOx catalyzed Si photoanode generates a photocurrent of 1.

Single-solute and bi-solute sorption of phenanthrene and dibutyl phthalate by plant- and manure-derived biochars.

The spatial arrangement of biochar and the exact underlying interaction mechanisms of biochar and hydrophobic organic compounds both remain largely unknown. The sorption of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and phenanthrene (PHE) to plant- and manure-derived biochars in both single- and bi-solute systems was investigated. The significant positive relation between surface polarity and ash content suggests that minerals benefit the external distribution of polar groups on particle surfaces.

Concurrent primary carcinoid tumor arising within mature teratoma and clear cell renal cell carcinoma in the horseshoe kidney: report of a rare case and review of the literature.

Primary carcinoid tumor arising in a mature teratoma of the horseshoe kidney is exceptionally rare and only 4 such cases have been reported in the world literature to date. The simultaneous occurrence of different subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) or RCC coexistence with non-RCC neoplasms from the same kidney is unusual and infrequently reported. Herein we report a case of primary carcinoid tumor arising within mature teratoma, concurrent with a clear cell RCC in the horseshoe kidney of a 37-year-old man.

Extranodal Rosai-Dorfman disease involving appendix and mesenteric nodes with a protracted course: report of a rare case lacking relationship to IgG4-related disease and review of the literature.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), also known as sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, is a rare disease of unknown etiology that typically presents as nodal disease in young children. However, it also can present in various extranodal sites and can be difficult to recognize if not considered in the differential diagnosis. Here, we report a case of appendix involvement by extranodal RDD, which occurred in a 69-year-old woman with a long duration of 12 years for intermittent right lower quadrant pain.

Complete excision of a giant thyroid goiter in posterior mediastinum.

Intrathoracic goiter is commonly located in the anterior mediastinum. Here we report a case of a 58-year-old Chinese male in whom we successfully removed the intrathoracic goiter and eased his dyspnea by a right posterolateral thoracotomy approach. Posterior mediastinal thyroid goiter with mediastinal compressive symptoms is an indication of surgery.

Angiofibroma of soft tissue: clinicopathologic study of 2 cases of a recently characterized benign soft tissue tumor.

Angiofibroma of soft tissue is a very recently characterized, histologically distinctive benign mesenchymal neoplasm of unknown cellular origin composed of 2 principal components, the spindle cell component and very prominent stromal vasculatures. It usually occurs in middle-aged adults, with a female predominance. Herein, we describe the clinical and pathologic details of 2 other examples of this benign tumor.

[Research on the atmospheric correction for ZY-3 MUX image].

The resolution of the ZY-3 MUX data is 5.8 meter, which is used to the subject classification. It is very difficult to use the dark target method for the atmosphere correction due to the lack of near infrared band in ZY-3 MUX data.

3D Branched nanowire photoelectrochemical electrodes for efficient solar water splitting.

We report the systematic study of 3D ZnO/Si branched nanowire (b-NW) photoelectrodes and their application in solar water splitting. We focus our study on the correlation between the electrode design and structures (including Si NW doping, dimension of the trunk Si and branch ZnO NWs, and b-NW pitch size) and their photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances (efficiency and stability) under neutral conditions. Specifically, we show that for b-NW electrodes with lightly doped p-Si NW core, larger ZnO NW branches and longer Si NW cores give a higher photocathodic current, while for b-NWs with heavily doped p-Si NW trunks smaller ZnO NWs and shorter Si NWs provide a higher photoanodic current.

Impact of deashing treatment on biochar structural properties and potential sorption mechanisms of phenanthrene.

Knowledge of the mineral effects of biochars on their sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) is limited. Sorption of phenanthrene (PHE) by plant-residue derived biochars (PLABs) and animal waste-derived biochars (ANIBs) obtained at two heating treatment temperatures (HTTs) (450 and 600 °C) and their corresponding deashed biochars was investigated. The decreased surface polarity and increased bulk polarity of biochars after deashing treatment indicated that abundant minerals of biochars benefit external exposure of polar groups associated organic matter (OM).

Tactile feedback display with spatial and temporal resolutions.

We report the electronic recording of the touch contact and pressure using an active matrix pressure sensor array made of transparent zinc oxide thin-film transistors and tactile feedback display using an array of diaphragm actuators made of an interpenetrating polymer elastomer network. Digital replay, editing and manipulation of the recorded touch events were demonstrated with both spatial and temporal resolutions. Analog reproduction of the force is also shown possible using the polymer actuators, despite of the high driving voltage.

Effect of cadmium on the physiological parameters and the subcellular cadmium localization in the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.).

The pollution of agricultural soils with cadmium (Cd) has become a serious problem worldwide. The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) was used to investigate how different concentrations of Cd (1, 5, and 25mgkg(-1)) affected the physiological parameters and the subcellular distribution of Cd in the potato.

[Characterization of the different organic matter from soils and sediments].

The humic acid (HA) and nonhydrolyzable carbons (NHC) were isolated from three river sediment samples (1, 2, 3) from the rivers in the Tongzhou district of Beijing and four soil samples(4, 5, 6, and 7) from the surface soils in the vicinity area of Tianjin near Bohai Bay, respectively. The isolated HA and NHC fractions were also characterized using elementary analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid state 13C cross-polarization and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C NMR), and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that NHC had lower H/ C and O/C atomic ratios than HA from the same source.

Social support and parenting self-efficacy among Chinese women in the perinatal period.

Objective: to examine the changes in and relationship between perceived social support and parenting self-efficacy in the perinatal period among pregnant women in mainland China.

Design And Setting: this was a secondary analysis with data from part of an experimental study of the effects of an interpersonal-psychotherapy-oriented childbirth psychoeducation programme on maternal adaptation. A longitudinal design was employed in the present study.

PAX8 expression in sporadic hemangioblastoma of the kidney supports a primary renal cell lineage: implications for differential diagnosis.

Hemangioblastoma is a benign, morphologically distinctive neoplasm of disputed histogenesis that typically occurs in the central nervous system either in the setting of von Hippel-Lindau disease or more often sporadically. Extraneural hemangioblastoma is exceptional and raises a challenging differential diagnosis. Herein, we report a primary renal hemangioblastoma occurring in 51-year-old woman without stigmata of von Hippel-Lindau disease.

Uterine leiomyoma with indolent B-lymphoblastic proliferation.

Uterine leiomyoma with TdT positive B lymphocytes infiltrating is very rare and may simulate precursor B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (B-LBL). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of such a lesion in English literature. A 51-year-old Chinese woman was noted a mass in her uterus in a routine physical examination.

3D printing of interdigitated Li-ion microbattery architectures.

3D interdigitated microbattery architectures (3D-IMA) are fabricated by printing concentrated lithium oxide-based inks. The microbatteries are composed of interdigitated, high-aspect ratio cathode and anode structures. Our 3D-IMA, which exhibit high areal energy and power densities, may find potential application in autonomously powered microdevices.

Tailoring n-ZnO/p-Si branched nanowire heterostructures for selective photoelectrochemical water oxidation or reduction.

We report the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) branched nanowire (NW) heterostructures, consisting of periodically ordered vertical Si NW trunks and ZnO NW branches, and their application for solar water splitting. The branched NW photoelectrodes show orders of magnitudes higher photocurrent compared to the bare Si NW electrodes. More interestingly, selective photoelectrochemical cathodic or anodic behavior resulting in either solar water oxidation or reduction was achieved by tuning the doping concentration of the p-type Si NW core.
