Fracture of the lateral process of the talus has often been missed or confused with lateral ankle sprain, and this can lead to long-term untreated cases of nonunion, malunion, and subtalar joint osteoarthritis. In a review of the published data, accessory anterolateral talar facet syndrome was not found after treatment of nonunion of the lateral process of the talus fracture. This report presents the case of a 40-year-old male snowboard instructor who suffered from a neglected fracture of the lateral process of the talus and was treated with open reduction using an iliac autogenous bone graft.

Most of the photosynthetic dinoflagellates possess two types of light-harvesting antenna complexes: peridinin (Peri)-chlorophyll (Chl) a/c-protein, as an intrinsic thylakoid membrane complex protein (iPCP), and water-soluble Peri-Chl a-protein, as an extrinsic membrane protein (sPCP) on the inner surface of the thylakoid. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an adult-onset motor neuron degenerative disease. Given that oxidative stress and resulting chronic neuronal inflammation are thought to be central pathogenic, anti-oxidative agents and modulators of neuronal inflammation could be potential therapies for ALS. We report here that the novel small molecular compound, 2-[mesityl(methyl)amino]-N-[4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-imidazol-2-yl] acetamide trihydrochloride (WN1316) selectively suppresses oxidative stress-induced cell death and neuronal inflammation in the late-stage ALS mice.

The Ã(3)A"-X̃(3)Σ(-) electronic transition of the HCCN∕DCCN radical was observed by laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. Rotationally resolved excitation spectra were observed for HCCN and DCCN, and effective molecular constants of the upper state were determined. The observed intensities of the rotational lines were anomalous, probably due to a level-dependent non-radiative decay process in the excited state.

Device-performances of 3.7 THz indirect-pumping quantum-cascade lasers are demonstrated in an InGaAs/InAlAs material system grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy. The lasers show a low threshold-current-density of ~420 A/cm2 and a peak output power of ~8 mW at 7 K, no sign of parasitic currents with recourse to well-designed coupled-well injectors in the indirect pump scheme, and a maximum operating temperature of Tmax ~100 K.

Methods: Seven men and 5 women (16 hips) aged 33 to 72 (mean, 50) years underwent HRA, whereas 7 men and 3 women (16 hips) aged 23 to 52 (mean, 40) years underwent metal-on-metal TRA; all were for osteonecrosis of the femoral head. We introduce a novel three-step procedure for precise niobium (Nb)-etching on the nanometer-scale, including the design of high contrast resist patterning and sacrifice layer formation under high radio frequency (RF) power. We present the results of precise slit fabrication using this technique and discuss its application for the production of superconducting devices, such as superconductor-semiconductor-superconductor (S-Sm-S) Josephson junctions. For the reactive ion etching (RIE) of Nb, we selected CF(4) as etchant gas and a positive tone resist to form the etching mask.
