Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia have increasingly been conceived of as "complex diseases of aging", determined by multiple, simultaneous, interacting pathophysiological processes. The condition known as frailty is a phenotype of aging and its comprehensive pathophysiology is thought to be closely related to the incidence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and the exacerbation of dementia.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of the multicomponent drug, ninjin'yoeito (NYT), on frailty in MCI and mild AD patients.
Aim: Yokukansan (YKS), a traditional herbal medicine, has been used to treat behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). The present study is the first double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to determine the efficacy and safety of YKS for the treatment of BPSD in Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Methods: A total of 22 sites consisting of clinics, hospitals and nursing homes participated.

Yokukansan (YKS) is used frequently against behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) together with donepezil in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we investigated the efficacy and safety of YKS in patients with AD in a non-blinded, randomized, parallel-group comparison study. Patients who had at least one symptom score of four or more on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) subscales were enrolled in the study.
