Hybrid sclerosing adenosis and basal cell hyperplasia of the prostate.

Hybrid sclerosing adenosis and basal cell hyperplasia of the prostate is a rare lesion. Here we report the seventh case of such lesions. Histological examination of the transurethral resection of the prostate of a 83-year-old Japanese man showed a small lesion consisted of sclerosing adenosis and basal cell hyperplasia, in addition to the diffuse glandular and fibromuscular hyperplasia.

Immunohistochemical application of D2-40 as basal cell marker in evaluating atypical small acinar proliferation of initial routine prostatic needle biopsy materials.

D2-40 has been recently discovered as a lymphatic endothelial cell marker, and some investigators have found that D2-40 is also expressed in myoepithelial cells of salivary gland or breast. In this study, we evaluated D2-40 expression of basal cells and applied D2-40 immunohistochemistry in the combination of P504S, cytokeratin 5, and p63 for ten lesions with atypical small acinar proliferation (ASAP) in initial prostatic needle biopsy. As a result, D2-40 was expressed in basal cells, lymphatic endothelial cells, and some stromal fibroblasts of normal prostatic tissue.

Diagnostic pitfall on the histological spectrum of adult-onset renal carcinoma associated with Xp11.2 translocations/TFE3 gene fusions.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) associated with Xp11.2 translocation/TFE3 gene fusion recently has been found. In this article, we demonstrate an unusual features of such a case.

Ureteral small cell carcinoma.

Ureteral small cell carcinoma is very rare; only eight cases have been reported in the literature. In this article, we report the ninth case of ureteral small cell carcinoma. A 79-year-old Japanese man presented with asymptomatic macrohematuria, and left nephroureterectomy was performed.

Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma: useful diagnostic application of imprint cytology and fluorescence in situ hybridization of chromosomes 10 and 21 in two cases of typical and eosinophilic variants.

Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is subdivided into typical and eosinophilic variants. We report such two cases with focus on imprint cytology and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The first case is a 53-year-old Japanese man and the second is a 76-year-old Japanese man.

Strategy for repeat prostate biopsy: predictors of positive biopsy and additional biopsy location.

Purpose: We analyzed patterns of tumor distribution in radical prostatectomy specimens from patients with repeat biopsies to determine additional appropriate biopsy locations for repeat biopsy.

Methods: Between January 2000 and June 2005, a total of 382 patients underwent transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy. Of these, 47 patients underwent repeat biopsy.

Carcinoid tumor of the renal pelvis: consideration on the histogenesis.

Carcinoid tumor of the renal pelvis is an extremely rare neoplasm and only two cases have been previously reported in the English-language literature. Reported herein is a third case of carcinoid tumor arising in the renal pelvis. The tumor extending from the left renal pelvis into the left kidney was incidentally found in a 55-year-old Japanese woman.

[Chemotherapy-resistant germ cell cancer of the testis treated by salvage surgery: a case report].

A 38-year-old patient who had a non-seminomatous testicular cancer was treated by resection of the retroperitoneal metastatic mass that had proven refractory to bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin (BEP) and paclitaxel, ifosfamide and cisplatin (TIP) chemotherapies. Although salvage chemotherapy was given against the chemorefractory metastatic lesions in the retroperitoneum, the serum alpha-fetoprotein level elevated to 3,252 ng/ml. Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection was performed, and viable cells were identified histopathologically in the resected tissues.
