Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed bleeding risks in COVID-19 patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and evaluated the effectiveness of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for controlling bleeding.
  • Out of 43 patients, 25 bleeding events were recorded, with older age linked to higher risks of bleeding and fatality; those with bleeding had longer hospital stays and higher death rates.
  • TAE was successful in managing bleeding in most cases, highlighting its role in treating elderly patients with COVID-19 experiencing severe complications while on ECMO.

Using a well-focused soft x-ray synchrotron radiation beam, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was applied to a full-Heusler-type Co_{2}MnGe alloy to elucidate its bulk band structure. A large parabolic band at the Brillouin zone center and several bands that cross the Fermi level near the Brillouin zone boundary were identified in line with the results from first-principles calculations. These Fermi-level crossings are ascribed to majority spin bands that are responsible for electron transport with extremely high spin polarization especially along the direction perpendicular to the interface of magnetoresistive devices.

Most motile bacteria are propelled by rigid, helical, flagellar filaments and display distinct swimming patterns to explore their favorable environments. Escherichia coli cells have a reversible rotary motor at the base of each filament. They exhibit a run-tumble swimming pattern, driven by switching of the rotational direction, which causes polymorphic flagellar transformation.

A 70-year-old woman has been followed up for chronic hepatitis C and hepatocellular carcinoma which had been successfully controlled by several sessions of radiofrequency ablation. A small cystic lesion in segment IV associated with adjacent intrahepatic duct dilatation was firstly noted 4 years before on MR imaging, which showed gradual increase in size and significant interval change in the MRI signal intensity of the cystic content on the follow-up examinations. The mass finally reached 4 cm in its largest dimension, associated with slightly enhancing thickened wall, suggesting its neoplastic nature.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the effectiveness of arthroscopic Bankart repair for shoulder instability in patients with over 20% glenoid bone loss, comparing results between those who received bone graft augmentation and those who did not.
  • - Results showed that patients who received bone graft augmentation (Group A) had significantly better outcomes, with a higher average Rowe score (95.0 vs 69.7) and a much lower recurrence rate (2.9% vs 48.5%) compared to those who did not receive augmentation (Group B).
  • - Among contact/collision athletes, while 50% returned to their pre-injury sports level in both groups, many in Group B experienced residual instability, highlighting the potential advantages of bone

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful experimental technique in materials science, as it can directly probe electronic states inside solids in energy (E) and momentum (k) space. As an advanced technique, spatially-resolved ARPES using a well-focused light source (high-resolution ARPES microscopy) has recently attracted growing interests because of its capability to obtain local electronic information at micro- or nano-metric length scales. However, there exist several technical challenges to guarantee high precision in determining translational and rotational positions in reasonable measurement time.

Objective: We employed a steroid-eluting, sinus-bioabsorbable device for local treatment after surgery for eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS). One year later, we investigated its efficacy in suppressing recurrence and reducing the use of oral steroids.

Methods: At one year after ECRS surgery, both 18 cases treated with a postoperative steroid-eluting, sinus-bioabsorbable device (Post-ST group) and 25 cases receiving conventional postoperative therapy (Post-Con group) showed significant improvement in the nasal symptoms (nasal obstruction, nasal discharge and olfactory dysfunction), CT score and threshold test (discrimination test).

Background: To evaluate ulnar variance (UV) as a parameter for Colles' fracture as a measure of the true length of the distal radius pre-operatively, we measured UV pre-operatively in 20 patients with Colles' fractures being treated surgically using the method of perpendiculars. Because the distal fragment is by definition dorsi-flexed, the dorsal edge of the most distal part of the radius is seen proximally and the volar edge of it is seen distally on true postero-anterior x-ray of the wrist.

Methods: We measured three different UVs in x-rays.

[reaction: see text] Binding properties of a series of isomeric m-phenylene ethynylene oligomers containing short amide sequences to a piperazinium dihydrochloride salt were investigated by using circular dichroism (CD) measurements. Although these isomeric oligomers exhibited similar helical conformations, high affinity was observed only for one oligomer. This behavior is presumably controlled by the orientation of amino groups of the amide sequence and the folded conformation of the oligomer.
