Leachability of microplastic from different plastic materials.

The use of plastic has become common. Large amounts of plastic waste are disposed in landfill without the ability to biodegrade. These plastic materials often disintegrate into microplastic that end up in the leachate, a wastewater stream containing harmful contaminants extracted from the plastic.

Sustainable Management of Organic Wastes in Sharjah, UAE through Co-Composting.

Daily human activities and vast green areas produce substantial amounts of organic wastes that end up in landfills with minimal treatment. In addition to the problems associated with landfills, disposal through this method is unsustainable in the long run and does not allow recovering materials from the waste. This paper focuses on the co-composting of different organic wastes produced in The Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), to optimize mixing proportions of three different kinds of wastes-sewage sludge (SS), green waste (GW), and food waste (FW).

Struvite recovery from anaerobically digested dairy manure: A review of application potential and hindrances.

Anaerobically digested dairy manure is rich in ammonium, orthophosphates, and magnesium, indicating a high potential for struvite recovery. Continuous generation of large amounts of dairy manure plus increasing global interest in anaerobic digestion of dairy manure suggest a huge market for struvite production with anaerobically digested dairy manure. However, the complex chemical composition of digested dairy manure presents hindrances to struvite recovery.

Determining the feasibility of phosphorus recovery as struvite from filter press centrate in a secondary wastewater treatment plant.

In this study, the workability of a pilot-scale, fluidized reactor was examined to determine effectiveness in removing, and recovering, phosphorus as struvite, from centrate at Lulu Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (LIWWTP), Richmond, British Columbia. The crystallization process was run continuously over a period of 5 months in two runs (Run 1 for 4 months and Run 2 for a month). In addition to efficient recovery of phosphorus as struvite, the study also investigated factors that affect the growth of struvite.
